I thought it was decent. Definitely worth a watch. It was weird, it's gory as hell, but done in a artistic way at times if that makes any sense. Definitely a WTF ending. Goes from a serial killer aspect to something I didn't really expect.

I wish they would have made that movie with actual monsters. Thought that had great potential up until the letdown of the actual reveal. Having said that, it was extremely well acted though.

I think everyone that didn't like it would agree with this. I am in that boat. Had some great potential. I loved how they presented the creatures during most of the movie... The blurry out of focus peripheral shots especially. It was like getting to see the monsters through the eyes of the blind girl, but not actually through her eyes obviously. Almost as if Shyamalan forced his audience to be impaired so-to-speak. Not sure if that makes sense... I'm about half-past a sixer & a bottle of wine right now so I'm probably not making as much sense as I think I am lol.

Just finished watching Bedeviled. I'll throw out a review next week, but it had some pretty badass antagonist/creature presentation. Some pretty god awful acting though. Bout to throw on Don't Knock Twice. Got a boat load of movies I want to see that look awesome (Get Out, A Cure For Wellness, Life, Belko Experiment, etc), but my cheap ass is waiting on quality ripoffs to hit the web.

Also saw that Rings was about to hit redbox (May 2nd). Anyone see that yet? Worth it?

Bedeviled (2016)


The biggest draw for this movie, and probably the only, is the creature presentation throughout. That alone made this crappy movie worthwhile. Some of the appearances were pretty simple, but yet wild & effective. Limited cgi usage, but it passed the eye test. As for the laundry list of cons... There's no background, the plot is errant, there's no continuity or direction, the acting is horrid, suspense is lackluster (lots of jump scares with ear-blasting volume), the sound fx/designs were terrible, too much camera panning, etc etc. The lead actress was especially cringe-worthy. I don't know who's dong she sucked to get that part, but it could be possible the entire crew got polished. I was baffled at how awful she was. She couldn't seem to portray basic human emotion. I laughed my way through almost every scene where she screamed or cried. Not to mention the overall idea of an app that toys with you before ultimately killing you is a pretty silly idea. In a way its essentially a rip-off of The Ring. It's as if someone came up with the idea of an app that kills you, but never really developed a story well enough to give it any direction. It's essentially just a bunch of scenes of a clown and/or ghost entities chasing a group of kids around until they kill them off 1 by 1. And sadly they didn't even have the budget to give us any gore to actually show any of the deaths. Written & directed by the Vang Brothers (Abel & Burlee). The script definitely fumbled the ball for this one, but they did enough to capture some decent entertainment at shock-value. Considering this was only their 2nd full-length collaboration, I'd say they have a promising career ahead of them if they can put a little more effort in their scripts & hopefully field a bigger budget for cgi, gore, casting, etc.

Don't Knock Twice (2017)


I agree with @Taddy Mason that this movie had the right makeup, but it never really seems to come together. For me, a lot of it had to do with an incoherent background and the progression felt a little clumsy. They bounce the story around and throw in flashback reminders of how the plot is supposed to make sense, all the while ramping up the suspense in every scene with lots of jump scares. The screenplay is nice. Lots of uniquely filmed shots with decent production values. The witch appears to be played by a real person so the cgi was limited but it had a good look to it. The acting was sort of hit or miss, largely due to the script. Some of the characters felt unnecessary as they added very little to the scope of the plot. The main characters though, the mother & daughter, are well played. Both display good range. They spent a lot of time on the emotional conflicts aspect of the film which gave it a dramatic soap opera feel. Overall I'd say it was a decent supernatural drama/thriller, albeit erratic & a tad over-dramatized. Worth the watch but nothing spectacular & doesn't really present anything new.

Run-of-the-mill haphazard supernatural thriller... 6.5/10

Desierto (2015)


This film is a very clear-cut cat & mouse survival thriller. Not much depth at all but it was pretty entertaining. Should disclose this is a foreign film (Mexico) so it has a lot of subtitles. Wasn't bad though given the nature of a survival film. It has a great setting that was beautifully filmed. The scenery was pretty awesome; everything from the barren desert landscapes to the gorges & rock formations. Pretty creative use of everything the landscape had to offer. This movie had zero character development so you never connect with anyone. The only time you ever really feel anything for a character is when Jeffery Dean Morgan's character comes upon what happened to his dog. Which I should probably also disclose as the most graphic dog death that I have ever seen. As an animal lover it was pretty difficult to watch. So be warned. JDM plays the villain really well, as he does in most everything he plays in (The Walking Dead for example, even though this was filmed prior to that). But as evil as his character was, you knew he loved that dog. The climactic ending didn't have much of a resolution which was sort of a bummer. But if you are in the mood for mindless entertainment, and are a fan of JDM, then this movie is definitely worth the watch.

Simple yet entertaining survival thriller... 7/10

I just watched 3 adaptations of the Richard Matheson novel "I Am Legend" for comparisons sake

Starting with 1963, The Last Man on Earth starring all time great Vincent Price. It suffers from an early 1950s feel even though it is '63, and Price, who has never been great at showing emotions other than shock, fear, and creepiness, comes off even more wooden than usual as he seems relatively ambivalent to his wife and daughter passing. The zombies are a combo of slow moving z's and vampires as they suck blood but stumble around. Even though they are able to talk, they are weak and stupid. The best parts are his wife whispering at the door and his old friend constantly berating him in zombie form. The narration is pretty cool. I give it a 5 to 5.5 for a good story but poor execution.

This is followed in 1971 by The Omega Man starring another all-timer in Charlton Heston. This one starts out great with Hest cruising around in a new car every day while drinking like a fish. He is going crazy seeing and hearing things which is interesting. He is constantly attacked by albino ghouls who wear cool mirrored sunglasses and spout anti-science retoric. They are not undead but more of a cult that refuses to use any technology, which is why they have trouble killing Heston (their best attempts include a catapult and burning at the stake). The movie could have been awesome if it continued in that direction but things derail when he meets a group of annoying kids with a Foxy Brown type chick leading them. That takes things down a cheesy path where Hest takes off his shirt and goes full Alpha male (I thought he was Omega?!?) I'll go a 6-6.5 for the first half.

The third was the one people are probably most familiar with, 2007's I Am Legend starring another huge star in Will Smith. While this one has the obvious advantages of learning from the previous 2 versions, and much, much better fxs, it does not always follow up. While the story itself is great (as previously noted) and the creatures and fxs are top notch. A couple of plot holes bug me and while Will Smith does a solid job, I can't help but think that this could have been an alltime great with a few tweeks. I generally like Smith but I can't help but think another actor would have been a better choice. Still, it is the best of the lot as I would give it a 7-7.5 By far the best action of the three, but the ending left some to be desired.

All three share the common theme of lone wolfs desperately trying to find a cure while fighting off mutated humanity that is trying to destroy them. The first two have the important point that the last humans become the feared monster, while the third one tries but misses on that piece. Classic story by Matheson with 3 interesting interpetations.

Big fan of the Matheson story and I have enjoyed all three adaptations.
