Split (2017)


M Night Shamalamadingdong is back baby! (Yes that was me channeling my inner @Chef99) Before I get too carried away I have to tell you that this movie wouldn't have worked without James McAvoy. Hands down his best performance in his whole career and stands out as one of the biggest reasons to watch this movie. You will find faults & flaws with this movie, but you can get past them due to McAvoy's phenomenal performance. His transition between personalities without fancy production cuts or camera work is amazing. You get to watch his madness change on a dime right before your eyes. The plot progression is twisty & suspenseful like most M Night movies which makes it entertaining until the end. The cinematography, acting, fx, etc are amazing. But before the horror fans get too excited you should know that this film isn't necessarily scary, rather it's tense & suspenseful. By that reason alone this movie probably shouldn't have been given the "horror" tag. A psychological thriller is more fitting. It has very little gore. Nevertheless, this movie is worth a watch. I wouldn't call this M Night's best work, but it was definitely one of his better thought-provoking thrillers. His attention to detail with all facets of directing is amazing. Everything from writing & casting down to human interactions & emotions. I hope there is more to come from M Night daring to be different again, because his lower budget work is outstanding and easily brings out his best storytelling.

McAvoy will make your skin crawl... 8.5/10

The Girl With All the Gifts (2016)


Been out the Z-horror game for a while mainly due to how exhausted the genre was getting, but somehow I managed to stumble upon a few gems recently. I call them gems mainly because they don't necessarily follow the same old tired traditional scripts, instead they add some new originality. This film, however, I have to admit is better than my recently reviewed Open Graves. This is probably one of the better made Z-flicks that I have ever seen. And yes I have to point out that its a UK film, because they deserve credit for making brilliant movies. @jakedog56 I hope you're reading this, because as a fellow Z-film enthusiast I'd love to get your opinion on it. As for the technical aspects... The apocalyptic landscape on display is one of the most convincing apocalyptic landscapes that I've seen since I Am Legend or 28 days later (even TWD). That setting gives us excellent cinematography with some awe-inspiring imagery created with interesting uses of composition, lighting, angles, etc. The score goes a long way towards setting each and every scene as well. To put it simply, this is quite the beautifully made movie. The use of CGI is subtle and sparingly used, and the makeup fx is superb. Plenty of gore as one would expect. The zombs are unique in that they stand perfectly still when not lured (sort of like the IAL zombs during daytime), which I thought was a very creepy and unique twist. In the acting department we got some great performances from Arterton, Nanua, Close & Considine. This is a solid movie in it's own right, but it stands amongst the very best zombie movies IMO. It certainly gives 28-DL a run for its money, both in it's use of it's low-budget and it's re-invention of the zombie trope. It's a fresh take on an otherwise stale genre, and I certainly recommend it!

A gift for zombie fans... 8.5/10

Really, I will only see horror movies with a 75 or better on rotten tomatoes... all else is not worth it for me... since I am not a horror movie fan...

Pet (2016)


Wow, this one took me by surprise. This movie disguises itself as a typical cookie cutter abduction/stalker horror flick but it is so much more. The acting from the 2 main actors, Dominic Monoghan (yes he was one of the LOTR Hobbits lol) and Ksenia Solo, was phenomenal. Both leads have great range. The story itself is fantastic as it grows from something seemingly simple to something extraordinarily complex. Without giving away too much I will only say that it is one of those script-flipping situations. Quite the psychological thrill ride with an ending that is quite disturbing. Cinematography, suspense & gore were top notch. I need to go back and rewatch some of this director's (Carles Torrens) work as I know I have seen Apartment 143 but I do not recall anything about it. Recommending this one!

Underrated gem... 8/10

I Am Not A Serial Killer (2016)


On Netflix! I wasn't very familiar with the book & its sequels written by Dan Wells, but had heard raving reviews. It is still on my to-do list. As far as I have learned, this movie deviates a little with the books due to budget constraints & on-screen translation issues but still adheres very closely. The bookies are calling it a great adaptation. After doing some digging I discovered the books follow more of an internal struggle with the main character, which you can imagine is very difficult to produce into a movie. Most movies have achieved this by giving the character an alternate ego in the form of an additional character that only he/she can see. The director decided against this. As far as the film goes, the progression is good but does have a slow-burn vibe. My wife thought it was too slow, but I didn't so others may have a different opinion than mine. It's not a very scary movie and doesn't produce the frights that major blockbusters do, but it does a great job of keeping you intrigued and still gives you all of the horror elements necessary with a decent amount of suspense & even a hint of the supernatural. Definitely a psychological mystery thriller of sorts. It's not overly gruesome or gory, but it does give plenty of blood & guts (organs rather). The cinematography was clever as it uses lots of artistic b-roll and some cool eye-witness style filming. It allows you to see everything through John's eyes, and helps you relate to him more. Acting was outstanding. Not sure why I was apprehensive about Christopher Lloyd in this sort of role, but he played it masterfully. Max Records in the lead role was stellar. Also worth noting the score had an excellent retro vibe to it, sort of like It Follows & Stranger Things. IMO this movie can be enjoyed by people who don't necessarily hold horror movies in such high regard. I could see some people finding it a little flat so I am a little worried about throwing out the recommendation to one & all. So I'll just say that if you have made it all the way through this review, then chances are you'll find this movie as entertaining as I did.

Impressive, slow-burn psychological thriller... 8/10

The Tunnel (2011)


As Above So Below meets The Decent, but filmed with tactics from The Fourth Kind (documentary-style interviews) & The Blair Witch Project (1st person camera). This movie will annoy and frustrate a lot of people because it does not have a defined ending, and of course the exhaustively over-used 1st person filming. At the end you are left with an unexplained and unsolved mystery, not to mention the 'creature or creatures' are mostly left to the viewer's imagination because A) you don't really get any clear shots of what it/they might be (alien, zombie, cannibal?) and B) you aren't quite sure if its just one or many? But you can find solace in the fact that the plot is so straight forward that it doesn't leave much room for plot holes. However, it really doesn't have much to offer except for the way it has been shot. The camera work and sound effects in this movie are pretty good and increases the suspense. The documentary-styled interviews gives you a sense of truth (even though its completely fictional) and almost makes you want to research it. I know the 1st person shooting films can be annoying to some so take it for what it is. It does have some security camera footage mixed in to give you a break from the possible motion sickness, but not very much. The acting is believable, which is all they needed to be. Nothing more nothing less. In the end this film tries to be original, but it simply isn't. You can applaud their efforts though because overall it was at least an entertaining movie. Not expecting everyone to like it so I won't recommend it.

This will go on my list for sure but it will be put on the bottom.

I have never watched a single second of "Lost" and I just started to binge watch it.

That said, I can't handle anymore Dominic Monoghan at the moment.

Pretty close, it could definitely be compared to a lot of 1st person films of that nature. Biggest difference is The Tunnel doesn't rely on the supernatural (moving objects, ghost appearances, etc) to get its suspense, rather real terrifying creature(s).
