Here is a good one! Green Room

A broke punk rock band (including Anton Yelchin- RIP) living out of a van on the road takes a gig out in the middle of nowhere for what turns out to be a white supremacists club. They witness a murder backstage and have to try to escape from the "green room" (common name for the performer's waiting room in the backstage area). The situation disintegrates into a bloody mess as both sides battle it out.

This is one of the better I have seen in awhile. Acting good? Check. Direction solid? Check? Gore and violence? Check and check. Gritty, disturbing horror-thriller? Check, check, check!

Few flaws in this one. Has a kind of Hostel feel to it without the over-the-top torture stuff.

Positives:
*As already mentioned, solid all-around production on a relatively low budget. Acting, directing, fxs, are all pluses.
*A well established nasty and realistic feel.
*Gratuitous Patrick Stewart as the big bad leader of the douchebag neo-nazis.
*Rottweilers like to bite!
*Real punk rock music! No Hollywood cop-out BS.

Negatives:
Not many. But nitpicking a little..........
*Storyline is paper thin. But that is intentional. It is what it is and does not try to be anything more.
*Captain Picard/Prof. X does a weird ass accent that is from nowhere I have ever heard before.
*It seems that the bad guys could have wiped them out pretty quick with a little more aggressiveness but they do attempt to give it a plausible explanation.

I give it a solid 8 out of 10. Creeping towards an 8.5!

Joe Bob sez check it out!
Excellent writeup jakedog! :suds:

This movie just vaulted to the front of my horror list... Can't wait. Thanks for the rec!

I think @Chef99 posted a link about this movie back in February... IIRC? I remember thinking Stewart looked odd in that role.

@Johnnydollaz89 & I talked about this movie a few months ago. I decided to watch it again last night and give it a proper review.

If you are confused about the dates, then join the club. The movie was originally released back in '14, but for some reason it is having a re-release this year? I haven't figured out why. But I suspect the original release was foreign? Now it is being brought to the US?

If any of you are a fan of Eli Roth's works, then this movie is a must-see. This movie went well beyond my expectations and left me feeling pretty disturbed. The acting from the leads is solid. Andy Powers especially is fantastic as Kent and carries the earlier parts of the film with a really good performance. Laura Allen is also very good as Kent's wife Meg whose journey through the film is in some ways as interesting to witness as his own. Peter Stormare was icing on the cake. Some of the other supporting cast are admittedly not fantastic, but that doesn't detract from the movie as a whole. The film is generally well-paced but suffers a little during the middle where it seems to stall. But don't worry if you feel this way because it soon gets going again and when it does, it really puts the pedal to the metal. Some of the scenes towards the end will stay with me for a long time. Hats off to the makeup department, because what they achieved with so little CGI should be considered a masterpiece. I do wish that the "transformation" had a faster pace just so we could have seen the end result for a longer period of time, rather than just a 5 minute scene. Oh well, just be prepared to shit your pants when you finally see it! This movie is dark, disturbing, original and very entertaining. The gore is excellent. One of the best horror films of recent years.

Reinventing a childhood nightmare... 8.5/10

I have an idea......a 3 headed shark that can separate from the main one (turning into 3 separate sharks) and attack people and then rejoin the 1 shark with 3 heads. This shit ain't so hard.

Come Back To Me (2014)

On Netflix! Not having recognized any of the actors, coupled with a director not known for anything outside of TV shows, made for low expectations. But I was surprised. This movie was a solid stalker thriller. The movie gets better and better as it goes on, until the conclusion which is pretty well executed and clever. This movie is based on the novel 'The Resurrectionist' by Wrath J Wright. The intensity or scare factor is OK without ever being brilliantly executed. Just mild jump scares here & there (with absurdly loud sound fx), but there is an overall unsettling atmosphere though which keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. There are of course the usual instances of characters doing completely unrealistic and unreasonable things that annoys you, but that's nothing new. I wasn't blown away by the acting, and some of the scenes seemed to detract from the movie (unnecessary). Altogether a decent effort but could have been delivered better. I'd recommend it, based on the fact that decent horror/thriller movies are pretty hard to come by on Netflix.

Low budget stalker thriller... 7/10

I did indeed. Haven't seen it yet either, but I will. Gotta give Stewart a lot of credit. He plays the roles he likes and I don't think he gives a damn what anyone thinks.

The twenty-one year-old Timothy "Tim" Allen Russell is discharged from a mental institution by his psychiatric Dr. Shawn Graham completely healed from a childhood trauma where his father purportedly tortured and killed his mother before being killed himself by Tim. His sister Kaylie welcomes him in the parking area and brings him home. Then she tells that they need to destroy an ancient mirror that she has found through working at an auction house. She then steals the mirror and the reluctant Tim follows his sister and has fragmented recollections from their childhood, going back to when his father Alan buys a mirror for the home office of their new family home. Kaylie and Tim see a woman with their father in his office and the behaviors of Alan and Marie change, ending in a family tragedy. Kaylie blames the mirror and now she wants to destroy it with Tim. Will they succeed?

The first 2 were decent and a little different..,....the first one took Twitter by storm.

Van Helsing? Nope, haven't seen or watched. Not much into Horror series, unless it's the Walking Dead and even that has lost some appeal to me. .

I watched this movie shortly after it came out, but for some reason I don't remember a whole lot about it? I was either A)drunk or B)unimpressed... Maybe a combination of the both? :noidea:

Van Helsing the movie? With Kate Beckinsale? Yea I watched it only because of her. Pretty solid flick from what I recall.

She can slay my demons any time... :eyebrows:

I remember watching this one at some point last year. I can't seem to find a review of it on the thread but I think that the Search function does not work very well sometimes.

I remember it being a pretty decent flick but also remember that if the mirror didn't work if it was covered, so maybe they could have taped a blanket over it?!?

Oh, I didn't realize this was a Roth movie. You're right, it's now a must-see for me.
