“A pair of Pittsburgh Steelers explosive offensive players are heading into their contract year and could be looking to join new teams in 2021. In a Q&A session with Steelers fans, Ed Bouchette of The Athletic said that he believes it is “not likely” that the team re-signs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and running back James Conner.

More precisely, when asked about the potential of Pittsburgh re-signing the players, Bouchette said “no” in regards to Conner and “not likely” regarding Smith-Schuster.”

If he stinks he's gone. If he's good he'll get the tag.

Bouchette's a good reporter but he's also pretty damn pessimistic. He got laughed at pretty hard for calling the Minkah trade pointless.

Prove it year. The problem is, they don't have a clear-cut #1 WR so I could see that necessitating a franchise tag next offseason.

Not unfathomable to think they'll let him walk though... This feels reminiscent of when they cut Sanders & Wallace loose and chose to "invest" in Antonio Brown instead.

Some recent Steelers WRs they let walk (or traded) after rookie contract:
Plaxico Burress (2005)
Antwaan Randle El (2006)
Santonio Holmes (traded)
Mike Wallace (2013)
Emmanuel Sanders (2014)

James Conner has joined the lengthy list of talented, yet injury-prone RBs... Wish him the best, but if he can't prove to stay healthy for 16 games then I don't see much of a career for him down the road.

Steelers let everyone go.

Juju is about to get the Antonio and Leveon treatment because he's too good a player for the Steelers to pay.

As for the other two, Al is getting older and his play slipped last year so I can buy it. Maybe a 1-year deal with no heir apparent at LT. I could conceivably see Conner coming back if he has a good year but his price tag is deflected by his injury so they could get him a less-commital price, but if he has a good year someone else will overpay.

Looks like the Steelers were on the right side of the ledger on both Brown and Bell.
Brown absolutely. The one pick they got for him was turned into Diontae Johnson and all he did was make all-pro as a rookie while Brown isn't on a team. Brown would've been a complete pain in the ass with those two throwing the ball.

Bell I'm glad they didn't pay, but that running back spot is still a major question mark.

They started guys at QB who would otherwise have been bagging groceries and still almost made the playoffs.
Well they're doing the same thing again this year, so they're not too bright.

Steelers are famous for letting people walk in FA and frankly letting these two walk is probably smart.

If they are going to do that they should just trade JuJu now and get something for him. Dudes a 23 year old and already has been to a pro bowl. I bet someone like the packers would give a first plus plus for him.

No they arent. They're notorious for not getting in to bidding wars with other teams and keeping a low profile during free agency. Doesnt make them "cheap", dumbass

How much of this can be contributed to playing for Tomlin?
He's old school like BB and a couple others. This new generation doesn't like that. It's ok for a little while or as long as you're competing year in and year out.

These kids like the rah rah Andy Ried and Pete Carroll types. Let the inmates run the asylum.
