Mariners trade deadline/rumors thread

My biggest prediction is we end up with Hosmer from SD. They are trying to unload his contract and we have room and need at 1B. If the cost was low as predicted, I would take him on.

Apparently I am not the only one who has this thought.

Ya I am guessing it will take a lot more than that to get Merrifield. Then could be part of it, but would be shocked to see Walton and/or Haggerty unless as throw-ins. I don't think it will take any of our top 5, but hearing names like DeLoach, Stoudt, Macko, Perez, Shenton, Case type players. Basically #10 through #30 guys.

I am fine with putting a collection of prospects together except a chosen few. The reason I put Walton, Haggerty, Murphy is two fold. One Jerry has done a terrible job of handling the 40 man roster. Secondly they need to get rid of Murphy or Torrens (obviously I would prefer Torrens) to make the roster better. Let’s say they do get Merrifield, you still got 3 catchers on the roster and then Moore has to get demoted instead of turning him into the super utility player which is where he has excelled. No idea if KC would take Murphy but any deal for a position player almost had to include him.

I don't think Murphy is in play with KC. They have one of the best catchers in the game and Murphy's bat doesn't play anywhere else. Torrens could be included because he fits KC's timeline and his ability to play at 1B works for them as well. I don't know if I would be in a hurry to deal Torrens though (I am as shocked as anyone that I am saying this), but his bat has been invaluable for the M's and we have so few RH power bats. While I don't like the 3 catcher roster, Torrens can be included at 1B so that does make a big difference.

I would love Moore back at his utility role. Late inning defensive replacement and baserunner would be great. If he finds his bat, we can squeeze him in several different spots.

Damn, saw this after I posted. I agree with their premise and agree completely on the untouchables, but I would prefer to unload Murphy with prospects. Merrifield upgrades your 2B and utility with Moore but what is more valuable for a playoff chase, Torrens who no one can question has a better bat than Murphy and has shown the ability to play 1B or just a backup catcher.

White is out for the rest of the year, not sure if he can even be traded.

He should be able to be traded. Any player can be dealt pending a physical and if say Kansas City’s doctors feel he will return fine next year it is their choice. It is all up to the team trading for him much like how the Mariners signed Giles even though he couldn’t throw a ball. The only thing I am not sure of is since he is injured I don’t know if he counts towards the 40 man roster which if he doesn’t count that kind of is a bonus.

But that isn't KC's problem is my point. They won't take a guy just to get them off Seattle's roster. Yes if we traded all prospects for Whit, we would have to release or make another trade to get rid of a roster spot. That can all be handled on a temp demotion until dust settles.

And Torrens actually was a real 1B going up with the Yanks. Not saying he is a good one, but not totally new to the position. I want him around as long as his bat remains steady. He is 7th in homers since returning to the bigs.

Feinsand: Like Preller, nothing Dipoto does would shock me. The Mariners are surprisingly in the playoff race, so the idea of them getting guys like Hendricks or Whit Merrifield makes sense.

The only reason I knew that was it happened early in the season to the mariners and they had to release someone on the 40 to add a player to it to then put on the 60 day IL. It makes sense since I could see teams cheating the 40 man by putting them directly on the 60.

This is where I wasn’t even 50% sure because baseball is so weird with they have so many freaking loopholes to manipulate rules.

agreed...but it may take .....campbell....to get it done...is my worrie....yeah..campbell is #10..but if he is off the table... then prob so are..

its hard for any team to give up its ace...so i would think...Zach Davies 27..more likely....and he has been mentioned in other rumars...

I would trade Kelenic in the right deal. I think at this point in Mariners history it would be better to trade for known MLB talent than hope for the next big thing in Kelenic. If goes elsewhere and blossoms, good for him as long as the return we got is MLB proven.

A team like Seattle has a clear need for Merrifield, who is under contract through 2022 with a team option in ’23, and the prospects to send over. It has to be the right offer, though.
