I use the word overpay but I like your term better of extra cost. I don't mean overpay by 10 to 15 mil but have to go over the coast amount of 2 to maybe upwards of 5 mil depending on the player to lure him away from a contender.

I know it is all semantics, but overpay to me is a guy who says I will play for you for $5M and they pay him $6M. Different tax laws also play a part which you would think we would have the advantage in over California teams at least.

I’m not sure about other cities, but an issue that isn’t really talked about now, is housing. It used to be Mariners would live east of the city (generally around the outskirts of Issaquah back when I was a kid. Then when I got to high school a lot started moving down South East. Seattle isn’t exactly the easiest place to get to as a player right now. No idea how important it is to most players but allegedly Ohtani had a place within walking distance of Angels Stadium and was one of the appealing things for him.
