Never go full Husky
I am not saying give Julio, Kelenic, Hancock of Kirby up for nothing. But if they can get a great AS back then that is a good deal. If Julio turns into Trout so be it. The goal is to win a World Series not minor league championships and fact is the Mariners have too many guys in the OF. It is nice that Kelenic is getting extended playing time but Lewis will eventually come back and they can’t keep all of their top guys in the minors or rotate them in and out of the lineup. Plus with one of those guys DHing and White coming back that means on paper the infield is Toro, Crawford, France then White with Raleigh and Torrens catching.I think I'm with you on this. From an organizational standpoint, our outfield is loaded. As much as I love Julio as a prospect, I would consider him expendable for the right deal. Shit, I think they could probably get more for Julio than just Turner and Scherzer.
With the way Toro has been hitting, an infield of France at first, Turner at 2nd, Crawford at SS, and Toro at 3rd would look pretty nice. My only long-term concern with Turner is that a lot of his game is based on speed, which doesn't age well.
This is the offseason where the Mariners need to go all in. Even after Kelenic, Raleigh and Gilbert graduated to the big leagues, we still have the number one farm system in baseball and the money to spend. Our opening day payroll in 2017 was $154m. Assuming that we move on from Seager, we should have well over $130m in payroll space. There's no way to justify not going all in.
Eh, I think Turner will still be an all star by the time, hopefully, any of the Mariners prospects make one. And a thing with next year, Toro has worked out fine at 2B, so unless they grab a guy like Bryant of a Story is it really an upgrade from Seager at 3B and Toro at 2nd?
With the Mariners it isn’t like they need to spend $100 million plus in the off-season. They have capital to go get a few guys and make some trades to go get what they need. Problem I really have is they have a legitimate argument not to spend. Including Gilbert, they have 3 top 25 pitching prospects that will be vying for the staff next year along with the plus the 5 they have and need a spot for Julio. There is a legitimate argument that Jerry can make that the only thing he needs to spend on this off-season is one scrub bullpen arm because they have Giles and Munoz coming off of injury and even they have like 5 guys who are vying for the rotation that may take that spot.
