Can someone explain this. I’m not a fan of Geno but why the hell do they keep trading starters or key contributors for backups/platoon guys. The only way this makes sense is if there is a much bigger trade on the way to make Rojas and Urias platoon at 3B. Cause even if the Mariners get Ohtani they can’t go into the season with Rojas and Urias being starters.

Seby Zavala graded among the top defensive catchers in MLB during 2023, tallying 6 Defensive Runs Saved.
And struck out 68 times in 168 at bats. The guy actually strikes out at a more frequent rate than Suarez, Hernandez and Kelenic.
I have no idea what this trade means. It could go a lot of different ways, but since I have no trust nor faith in the front office, I'll assume it means salary dump with no plans to re-invest the cash windfall. And I really, really hope it does not mean they are going after Chapman. That guy can't even hit in Toronto. Imagine how he would hit here.

"We needed the money from Geno's salary to go after (fill in the blank with your favorite guy here...Snell, Glasglow, Ohtani, Bellinger) but we had no idea the bidding would go so high. So, we'll just stick this money in our back pocket in case we need it at the trade deadline."

Another Mariner fire sale camouflaged as a 'good intentions that didn't work out as we hoped' farce.

Can only imagine they feel the pressure to produce. The Astros have been dominant Since they moved to the AL west and then the Rangers last year.

Do they care? Probably not.

Free agent Jeimer Candelario is among the Mariners’ options at third base, following the trade of Eugenio Suárez to the DBacks today.

Another guy I was concerned might be in Dipoto's wheelhouse. He'll make more contact than Suarez but not drive in as many runs, nor play as good defense, and will cost at least as much money if not more.

The Mariners needed 2 COF’s (or a COF and DH) and a 2B going into the offseason. So now they need 4. I don’t think Candelario would be terrible but terrible IMO of resources with the self imposed salary cap. Candelario and the dumb platoon at 2B is fine if they trade for sign Bellinger and Ohtani/or trade for Soto but damn this seems dumb. The Cards signed two pitchers too so getting Donovan and one of the two OF’s seems unlikely cause I think it’s cost more than Miller and that is a big no thanks.
