In 1994 Mariners were 22nd in payroll at $27M. They bumped that up to $34M in 1995 making them 11th. For a Mariners franchise, this was huge. Our cheap ass owner today can't even do this. So sad of a franchise.

At least back then they had a (stupid) but an excuse of they weren’t making money on top of money like this group is. This group profited what like $200 last year and profited massively this year. So conservatively they banked $500 million these past two seasons so no excuse not to put $100 million back into the on field product

Thats why I would never sign the guy unless it was for his bat only. He cost waaaaaaaaaaay too much money and a sore elbow could cost a team its best bat AND pitcher. I think what he's done is neat but not sustainable for the long term.

Dont get me wrong..I like Murphy.and he.
Has become.a good.hitter as well..

But he is injured all.the time..whitch makes it.

I'd like to see him retained, but not at the expense of adding a regular player. Murphy has hit .292/.357/.523 the last two seasons in 61 games. That's really good, especially for a catcher. If the Mariners are insistent on having a DH by committee, I feel like Murphy is a good fit for that while spelling Raleigh at catcher.

From what I heard they aren’t actually allowed to speak on anything during the postseason. So can’t talk about whether they will sign Murphy, intend to or whatever. Same with why they dodged the QO question with Teo. Never realized MLB had some really dumb rules until this press conference debacle.

Really? To what extent are they able to speak about this stuff? Not that I expect the organization to really show their cards, that just sounds strange to me.

M’s historically never want to spend, they always seem to land between 15-20th payroll, give or take … Hasn’t worked out really well either considering we’re the only team in the league now that has never made it to a World Series …

The worst part is that ownership/FO can point the fingers at the teams with big payrolls that failed to make the playoffs this year.

I think NW posted that Dipoto said they've already decided on the qualifying offer for Teo, so you're thinking they'll lowball on purpose so he'll walk? Could be. If so, I guess we'll see what 5 tool wonderment Dipoto picks up to replace him. And what he'll do with the compensatory draft pick if Teo refuses the QO.

And the FO have made it clear they're just going to keep doing shit the same way they have been. We're fucked, but there's no point in saying how shitty it is. All I can do as a fan is see what "improvements" he comes up with and decide if I want to get invested. If not, I'll find another team to follow and just keep my MLB subscription and cancel fubo since I literally only keep it to watch M's games.

I'm not exactly a huge Teo fan, but I've looked at what will be on the market and at best we'd get a lateral replacement for him so I'd really like to see him retained.

Unfortunately I'm stuck with this damn franchise. Having lived in Washington my entire life - stints in Rome and Kosovo aside - I have no reason to root for another team unless I have money on them.

Not sure if you herd Teo speak about coming back after the last game but I found his wording interesting. He said he loves Seattle, the players, and the organization, but he says it isn't up to him. My brain tells me the offer they made him after the traded for him was laughable. Maybe I am overly cynical.

Unfortunately I don't believe you are being overly cynical. Since we traded for him I had a strong feeling he was a rental. The only way I think he would've earned a contract extension from us is if he hit like he did in 2021 or somehow became a huge fan favorite similar to Suarez.
