Santana has played too well to send down or release.

If we tried to send him down without options, the Red Sox would probably claim him because they need a second baseman and he’d probably make us look really stupid by doing well up there. He was also one of the best performers in spring training.

The guy could be a late bloomer like Nelson Cruz.

This decision is really pretty easy. The tough decision comes when Santana is on the bench and guys hitting 100 points or more lower than him are playing. Do you bench someone for a better player or do you keep playing the "regular" guy for what amounts to baseball politics? Those are going to be the types of roster and lineup decisions that will one day be the difference in a good team and a really good team. At some point, management is going to have to put baseball politics aside if they ever want to get to the Promised Land.
