I was going to post the same thing. If I ruled the NFL the Niner's would have been awarded a 1st down and the yards for Matthew's late hit then penalized the yards if there was a dead ball penalty to be assessed for the scrum afterwards. Matthew's penalty should have been a separate deal, then maybe offsetting dead ball penalties for the scrum.

Yep, as it stands it rewards defenders to instigate fights to get offsetting penalties.

Staley did EXACTLY what he should have done.

If any of our players take a cheap shot like that, especially our QB, our players need to back him up. Get in the face of whoever that POS is. Doesn't mean to do something stupid about it and get a penalty. Just means that our guys defend their own and don't tolerate crap like that. Staley was perfect.

Clay needs to be fined for the late hit AND throwing punches. He is a punk. Never cared for him.

hesitated to post this but ah hell....................to me, Staley didn't have to go "in there" to start with? if they continued to rough up Kaep, then of course you help your teammate....ANY teammate. but it seemed like Kaep was walking away just fine, and we'd retain the 15 yarder.

whether Staley was right or wrong, in that heated moment refs will tend to flag him. whereas if he doesn't even go in there, no possibility of a flag.

This is all I'm trying to say. Kaep bounced right back up and it was a silly flag to take.

If not Staley, then Boldin should have been flagged. There is no way the entire scrum was just Packers putting the Niners over their knee and the Niners not doing anything about it. The penalties should have been offset, 4th and 5. No matter how many flags were thrown against the Packers you could only accept one. A possible ejection of Mathews is feasible, but with hindsight I'm sure the Packers would trade a 4 or an unlikely 7 (Missed FG) point swing for Mathews getting ejected.

I don't believe that's true. If it is, it's essentially a greenlight for anyone to do anything that wouldn't warrant an ejection if there's already a personal foul.

It was either just Matthews (how it would be called in hockey, where post-whistle scrums are common) or Matthews, Staley and Matthews (who was the only one throwing blows). Boldin's shove was a response to be shoved.

It doesn't matter. Are his teammates supposed to wait till their QB gets injured on a play in order to back him up?

No, but they shouldn't be drawing flags for no reason either. It's not like the hit was even that bad; it was just out of bounds. If he went at the knees or head fine, but with the hit that was, take the flag and move on.

Hasn't the clothesline been against the rules for decades?

I don't really care if it would have been legal in play or not, it wasn't worth giving the yards right back.

I do agree a late hit should be treated as a live ball foul, but you don't provide the chance for the refs to cancel out the penalty there.

You said the hit wasn't that bad.

There's a reason they banned those hits long before head shots. Tackling someone by the throat is never "not that bad."

Clay launched himself into the air and grabbed kap by the neck to take him down. That play is illegal (and dangerous) even in the field of play.

The hit wasn't that bad. If they had full knowledge back in the day, helmet to helmet hits would have been banned far more quickly.

That's wonderful that those hits would have been banned earlier with full knowledge.

But they did ban the exact thing Matthews did because it was deemed to be too dangerous a play.

I can't imagine you brushing it off like this had someone delivered a flying clothesline to Brady's neck when he was 3 yards out of bounds.

But I'm not going to debate how bad a hit was that the NFL decided was too dangerous of a play decades ago.

I would say it was a dirty play, which I said here. But if my lineman decides to undo the penalty by committing one of his own, I will call him out on it exactly the same.

Stupid penalties lose football games, and that was a stupid penalty.

You're forgetting one little detail (prior to the game):

On Tuesday, Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews told ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike" that perhaps the best way to slow read-option quarterbacks like Kaepernick is to hit them.

You think Staley forgot about the comments Matthews made about "stopping" Kaepernick? Heck no!
