I think the magic number's like $2.5 mil needed draft money. But it is a moving target because if we don't trade up, and end up trading out for some future picks it could be a lot less. We need the details on the hit from Davis' extension to see where we're really at.

I'm not worried because we have a really good number cruncher to make things work, and we'll have a lot of vets with rookies breathing down their neck with motivation to restructure. Might be able to get Whitner to restructure, but if I were him I wouldn't because I really don't think we can logistically put two rookie safeties out there together.

The cap space was updated by the league today so I assume any Davis change is already calculated in there.

Per Maiocco's article:

If the 49ers keep their scheduled 13 draft picks, they can be expected to spent approximately $9 million in signing bonuses, according to a league source. That would work out to about $2.25 million in cap space to sign their rookie class.

Were those the cap hit numbers, or signing bonus numbers?

Maiocco is tripping balls as you can see.

Okay, thanks. Something was WAY off there.

I think he's getting a number from last year's class or something. Well now I'm really in favor of swapping for some future picks.

Looks like trading down for future 1st rounders is the way to go.

Only the top 51 salaries apply towards the cap, so likely only the 1st and 2nd rounders (3 players) will apply towards the cap, because the guys with the salaries $600K and lower won't make the top 51.

Current draft class would look something like this:

31st pick Doug Martin $1,234,000

34th pick Coby Fleener $971,000

61st pick LaMichael James $603,250

Top 51 goes out the window on the first day of the league year. So if those guys aren't counting against the roster at that time then we wasted a lot of picks because they won't all make it to the practice squad.

It really comes down to the following 5 picks. They need to trade those for future picks or use them to trade higher. There isn't space roster wise or cap wise for all these picks. Of course some could be practice squad guys.

173rd pick

I can't see us bringing more than 9 players, and that includes the two comp 7ths that we can't burn even if we wanted to.

If we don't move up to get someone in the first, I'm pretty sure we'll see some action to target players in the 2nd. I want to see at least the addition of a 3rd next year.

49ers currently have $1,034,822.00 in cap space with the Anthony Davis extension raising his 2013 cap hit.

Rogers can be cut before the season starts without paying him the extra 5 as well right?

Something like $1.5m of his base was gtd. The rest of the cap hit would be accelerated SB. The original report that all of his base was gtd was inaccurate.

Oh. Thanks for clearing that up Ray.

I think it's safe to say the Niners aren't just gonna throw away 1.5 million, so he won't be cut.

I agree especially since the savings wouldn't be that much. Next year he is a goner IMO.
