Giants have been the busiest team this off season after the bums.
I like the Lee signing.Giants have been the busiest team this off season after the bums.

I agree with both positions ... but ... IMHO ... busy doesn't always equate to productive ... I think we need to see how some of this plays out ,,,, I do like the Lee signing but we need to wait on Ray. He was a CY winner ... but he also had TJ surgery ... I would expect him to bounce back but there is always a health recovery question tied to a surgery. I love Hicks' potential ... but at the moment ... it's only potential. I'd really like to see him spend the money on Monty .... we need someone stable behind Webb. Takes a lot of pressure off the new kids.I like the Lee signing.
I like the Ray trade.
I don’t hate the Hicks signing.
Liquidating Stripling (and Haniger and Desclafani) are just correcting prior mistakes.
Everything else has been lawn-chair-management.
And there are still 4 BIG FA on the market who will strongly define the off season shuffle.
In a bubble, I am totally OK with a 2-year plan. But this is now 5 years into the last 2-year plan. And now the clock starts again?I agree with both positions ... but ... To be a playoff team ... I think you need around 90 wins ... and we've only done that once in the past decade. This is a decent start ... but I still think we have a few more moves that will need to be made ... this 'recovery' may take a good two or three years to complete .... for us fans ... it could be a nice ride or a real shite-show!
I agree 100% ... we've been at this for 5 years now ... my gut tells me there is no real plan ... what I see is .... they immediately tell the SF fan base that this will be the year that things change ... they are going all in on ALL the big name FAs ... and they do ... and they NEVER sign any of them . Then they pivot to some very strange options . . Almost seem to be 'patches' rather than long term building blocks. For me. Soler fits that description ... he will be fun to watch ... but he can't put us in the playoffs.. we are too far away from that at the moment ... after losing on both Ohtani and Yamamoto .... he replaced those options with Ray and Hicks ... not bad pickups ... but not quite the same ...In a bubble, I am totally OK with a 2-year plan. But this is now 5 years into the last 2-year plan. And now the clock starts again?
This is why I hate FZ.
I see your thinking but consider this:I would concur with that as well. My thinking is that the Giants have money, Woodruff has a good history, why not take another guy and stash him on the 60 day? In my opinion, he would be worth it. I still think the Giants could have the money to sign Montgomery and I hope that they do. Snell could possibly be signing with the Yankees so let's sign Montgomery and get on with it!
I don't completely disagree but with FZ sometimes those lawn chairs turn into LWJ, Yaz, Sabol, etc.I like the Lee signing.

I don't think it will take 90 wins to get a WC birth. Maybe in the AL, but the NL will be more like 85. The AL has more truly awful teams that the other teams can beat up on. I think that's achievable, maybe even likely if we get Monty.I agree with both positions ... but ... IMHO ... busy doesn't always equate to productive ... In the Wild Card era, does one league having worse (or more) bottom feeders make that big a difference on the number of wins to make the playoffs?I don't think it will take 90 wins to get a WC birth. Consider that the Giants have some guys coming up but not much stability at the big league level yet. Webb is long term. Ray only has another year. Hicks could easily slide back to the bullpen. Cobb is off the books after this year. I think the Giants would be a great landing spot for someone like Woodruff, unless he wanted to stay with his only known organization or on a proven winner. He obviously took the former and we have no idea who else was talking to him (besides maybe the Mets) but I think the Giants would have been a good fit for him if he wanted to make sure he had a good shot at starting when he got healthy.I see your thinking but consider this:
What if the expectation is that several young SP in the system will be ML ready next year, if not in ST then shortly after?
Do you want another rehabbing guy in the mix when you'll probably have limited spots? Moreover, wouldn't he and his agent know that as well and be more inclined to sign elsewhere?
Sabol isn’t much. He isn’t bad, mind you, but he isn’t anything to get excited about.I don't completely disagree but with FZ sometimes those lawn chairs turn into LWJ, Yaz, Sabol, etc.
Exactly. Those are great finds when bookended by Betts and Freeman. Not as much when it’s Flores and JD Davis.Sabol isn’t much. He isn’t bad, mind you, but he isn’t anything to get excited about.
And in 5 years, Estrada, Yaz and Wade are simply not enough. The strategy works as a side dish. Not as a main course.
Not as much as it used to, but still a difference. This year NL teams play 46 games vs. the AL and 116 vs. the NL. Maybe the AL will have fewer crap teams this year, but that's not the way to bet.In the Wild Card era, does one league having worse (or more) bottom feeders make that big a difference on the number of wins to make the playoffs?
Sure, but how many main courses are you going to get from lawn chairs? Those guys are usually drafted or traded for, occasionally brought in as FAsSabol isn’t much. He isn’t bad, mind you, but he isn’t anything to get excited about.

And FZ has added none in his 5 years. That’s my point.Sure, but how many main courses are you going to get from lawn chairs? Those guys are usually drafted or traded for, occasionally brought in as FAs
Fair criticism. I guess at the end of the day you need to come through at some point. And FZ has added none in his 5 years. That’s my point.
Remember during the first quarter of the season last year, we were all laughing at the Mutts for giving up on him. Then he disappeared on us.One player I'd expect a bit of a bounceback is J.D. Davis. His overall line of .248/.325/.413 (104 wRC+) in 546 plate appearances was solid, but his overall production cratered after he tweaked his ankle in June. He's been a solidly above-average hitter (114 wRC+) in his career.

I don't remember a whole lot of chatter about a nagging injury when he suddenly became Neifi Perez with the bat. Hope it was just an injury thing and that he is all better now. It would be good to have his typical production in the lineup because he usually hit well in the past when he got regular playing time.Remember during the first quarter of the season last year, we were all laughing at the Mutts for giving up on him. Was it a freak injury that he should be able to recover from with little issue, or is it a sign he is injury prone and can’t play enough to be an effective “everyday” player?
