Bellinger off the board. And strong rumors that Snell is soon to follow.

That leaves Chappy and Monty.
So very glad we dodged the Belli bullet. Although, a 3 year contract for him would have been digestible. He was never signing that contract with us though.

Giants are reportedly one of 4 teams contending for Kike Hernandez.

With the Cubs signing of Cody Bellinger 3/80 don’t be surprised if the SF Giants sign Matt Chapman to a similar 3/60M deal with opt outs after the 1st 2 yrs. Unlike Bellinger who will opt out the Giants will be stuck with Chapman who’ll block the development of Casey Schmitt.

I wouldn't be surprised but yet will be very disappointed. They need to sign Montgomery, not Chapman.

Nick Ahmed signed to a minor league deal and is (obviously) an NRI.

At least they went after probably the best defensive shortstop left on the market. That does seem to suggest Hernandez is going elsewhere (but not necessarily). If Hernandez is going elsewhere, that probably ups the likelihood of landing Chapman.

While I agree it also makes me wonder .... are they making a concerted effort to sign Montgomery or have they in fact shifted away from any pitching acquisitions? Has Montgomery given FZ any indications that he does not really want to play in SF?

I'm personally very 'unexcited' with this this years signings. As a team that hasn't done well at all in the past 7-10 years I would have expected them to try and put some future building blocks in place that they can leverage moving forward. Hicks may be the only one that fits that criteria. Almost all of the other signings seem to fall into a 'patch' category. Gives me the feeling that FZ is only concerned about 'this moment in time'. Solar and Chapman (maybe0 would give us some additional offense. That's a good thing, but at what cost?

If he really wants to compete in the playoffs this year and was willing to bid on both Othani and Yamamoto why not just go all in and go after both Montgomery and Snell. Cost you a hell of a lot but would give you a very dominant rotation .... immediately!. Then spend next year trying to upgrade some of the under performing areas. IMHO it's much easier trying to move forward when you have a very dominant rotation to start with ....

But as we all know .... this will never be a possibility .... and next year we will go through another round of high profile players .... not signing with us ...

I do think the Lee signing was with the intent of building the long term future of the team. However, I have my concerns with his bat being big league caliber.

I do wish we could have landed Yamamoto but we were apparently hamstrung from the start on that possibility. I'm good with landing Montgomery, and there were a couple other free agent pitchers I would have liked the Giants to have at least seriously made bids on but I'm not a fan of Snell. He is really extreme in his seasonal output (from Cy Young winner to 4th starter) and there are red flags to his ability to sustain last year, based on some of his outlying stats (such as walks per 9, etc). I'd be glad to pass on him.

I think Ahmed is AAA depth and Fitz gets the reserve IF role.

Now Beck is experiencing “hand soreness” and is flying to SF to have a specialist look at it.

Assuming the worst for Beck and Winn…

Webb
Harrison
Hicks
Hjelli
Small (??)

Hjelle and Small would just be openers. I cannot see the Giants putting anyone else from the existing 40 man (or minor league rosters) in the rotation as traditional starters right now. This may finally push the Giants to sign another starter. Probably not Montgomery (or even Snell for that matter).

Monty wants to sign with the Rangers per Amick.

Guess we'll need to deal for Cease.
What do you suppose Cease would cost? It would have to be Harrison plus. That doesn’t even ADDRESS the problem, let alone begin to correct it.

While Cease would be a definite upgrade to the rotation, his cost does not justify the acquisition. He is being treated as a no. 1/2 starter but he's only posted one season that suggests that he is that level of quality. The cost is based on potential, mainly. And, as you pointed out, Harrison (and/or Whisenhunt) would be part of the package going to Chicago. Not a good idea.

And he hits FA after next year.

We need SP depth right now. So trading Harrison for Cease, even straight up, does not address the issue at hand.
