I know that it is a moot point but Woodruff is getting $2.5M in 2024 and $5M in 2025. However, the buyout on his 2026 option is $10M. The option, if exercised, would be $20M for 2026.

Brisbee, this morning:

If the Giants are focused on making sure the pitcher will hold up over the long term, they can sign Jordan Montgomery, who seems like a strong bet to add some measure of value through the life of his contract. If they want a ker-pow, blammo, homina homina homina kind of signing, there’s Blake Snell, who just won the National League Cy Young Award.
Either one. I’m not sure if Snell left a tuna fish sandwich in Bob Melvin’s car last year, so I can’t speak to the interpersonal dynamics of the last two seasons. But the Giants have two choices if they’re willing to dance with Boras in the pale moonlight. They can get practical, or they can get flashy. Either one is sensible from here. Snell is the two-time Cy Young Award winner who could co-ace with Logan Webb for at least five innings at a time. Montgomery is an optical illusion of a pitcher, who either looks like a boring No. 3 starter or a necessary rotation stalwart, depending on which angle you’re looking from. That would also work.

I think Montgomery fits in nicely as the number two guy behind Webb. I don't really get why he's talked about as a number 3 guy when his work the past few seasons have put him in the top 40 among starting pitchers. That puts him solidly as a number 2 guy.

Where does everyone grade the Giants this offseason so far?

You could use the popular A-F system or the broader system of 1-10. Your choice or both if you want.

Jon Heyman on how what he has heard recently between the Giants and Matt Chapman. "The belief is ex-A’s star Matt Chapman wouldn’t mind the Giants, but there was a decent gap in talks at last check."

Good. Let somebody else overpay for this declining K machine.

I think you cant really put a mark up quite yet. We need to see what he does with Monty. For me personally ... I want to see someone proven behind Webb when the season opens. Cobb and Ray are good choices but in my opinion ... still open questions. Hicks IMHO is just a 'flyer' at the moment. Lots of potential but no proven track record.

Agree ... but my fear is that he will pass on Monty or Snell and pivot to Chapman as an alternative ... ...

I agree, we may not be done. Monty will improve the team, Chapman may actually bring them a notch down considering it will take bats away from Flores and Davis being traded.

I agree. The rotation is such a shit show, I HAVE to assume it is an unfinished product.

If they don’t add AT LEAST one more opening-day SP, then I have a hard time grading the off season anything other than an “F”. No matter your opinion of the other adds, going into the season, supposedly attempting to compete, with only 2 SPs is completely unacceptable.

If they are able to add AT LEAST 1 more SP, then viewing each add/removal in a vacuum, I would rate the sum of the moves at MAYBE a B-. But much of that is based on how Lee actually ends up performing. If he is a bust, then everything else is pointless. However, if you view the off-season’s moves as simply part of a larger whole, I don’t see these moves really moving the needle in any appreciable way. So I would have to go with more of a C- grade.

Some notes from Farhan Zaidi today:
-Agrees that they are in a youth movement, especially on the pitching side
-Sees shortstop/pitching as areas where they could continue to add, hinting more in terms of NRI deals rather than MLB deals

Anderson signed with Seattle yesterday, so that dice roll is off the table.

Remaining shortstops on the market: Nick Ahmed, Elvis Andrus, Brandon Crawford, Kike Hernandez, Adalberto Mondesi
You could get desperate and include Hanser Alberto (5 games in 2022, 17 in 2021) and Jean Segura (1 game in 2022, 1 in 2021) but neither are really shortstops.

Starting pitchers on the market are a lot more robust: Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell, Julio Urias, Zack Grienke, Michael Lorenzen, Mike Clevinger, Rich Hill, Johnny Cueto, Noah Syndergaard, Jake Odorizzi, Vince Velasquez, Matthew Boyd, Brad Keller, Eric Lauer, Julio Teheran, Madison Bumgarner, Dallas Keuchel, Tommy Milone, Drew Rucinski

Finally, relief pitching is pretty bare, compared to starting options: Anthony Bass, Ryne Stanek, Brad Hand, Brad Boxberger, Aaron Loup, Brett Martin, Matt Barnes, Matt Wisler, Mark Melancon, Nick Wittgren, Alex Claudio, Mychel Givens, Jarlin Garcia, Sam Coonrod, Ryan Tepera, Alex Colome, Matt Bush, Jeurys Familia, Daniel Norris, Jimmy Nelson, Alex Reyes

I could see Nick Ahmed as a possible fallback for Luciano/Schmitt as he is probably best of the lot (And that is saying something). Maybe Mondesi for his potential but that seems to be missing why they want to bring in someone. All that being said, i wouldn’t be surprised to see Crawford in camp, just to hang it up at the end of spring.

More Zaidi:

-Did not rule out further additions to roster, but shifting into the regular season mode-Believes it might be a challenge to get Luis Matos MLB at-bats. Preference is for him to not start year in AAA and believes he is ready for next step.

-Reiterates his stance that he has not heard the perception of San Francisco as being a detriment to recruiting free agents, but agents use it as a negotiating tactic

-Is confident that current players like the experience of living in San Francisco

In terms of Matos, he did indicate that there might be a way for him to still get 300-400 at-bats, but the current starting outfield will consist of Conforto, Lee, and Yastrzemski.

I don’t see why Matos needs to be on the big league roster. Seems he may need a bit more seasoning. Would rather see Ramos get a decent shot

Bellinger off the board. And strong rumors that Snell is soon to follow.

That leaves Chappy and Monty.
