Well, looks like no Kim in a Giants' uniform this year.

yeah, as the article states, the opt-outs incur a significant risk to the Rays. If Kim is fairly hurt this year, $15M is a lot to pay. We shall see.

Just saw posted on my Hockey Forum site on the Non-Sharks Bay Area sports thread that the Giants have traded Taylor Rogers to the Reds for a pitching prospect.

WTF?

and we are shipping 6M to the Reds as well. A total and complete salary dump (without actually clearing much salary)

This trade makes absolutely zero sense to me.

It dumps $6M salary this year. He was a bit lucky with strand rate, has declining velocity, career year last year. I can see it.

They are probably thinking hes due to regress/get hurt and they need the bullpen spot for a younger (cheaper) arm.

Roxby is just a bag of used batting practice balls, though. We are not getting anything in return.

So selling high and only getting slight salary relief is a BAD trade.

There must be another trade/signing coming in the near future that needed the roster spot. That is the only thing that makes sense to me.

1. I'm not sure either of us know anything about Roxby.
2. Re: another trade -- The trade does free up some payroll space but probably not enough to sign one of the top remaining free agents while also having some comfortable breathing room under the CBT threshold. Of course, the Giants could just decide to cross that threshold again.

This is a weird trade but not completely surprising. Despite good numbers, Melvin just didn't seem to trust Taylor Rogers in high leverage situations, using him mainly in low and mid situations. Really odd. I don't get the idea that "hey, this guy has some underlying metrics that make us nervous. So instead of using him because he's been reliable and has a history of doing well (which is why we signed him in the first place), let's put him at the back of the pen. Instead, we'll throw the guy with high octane stuff that is getting knocked around on a regular basis. Yeah, that will help us win ballgames".

I really hope there is a 2nd move coming up because subtracting from the bullpen for some salary relief and a C grade prospect just seems dumb on its own. Roxby is an undrafted player (which doesn't carry as much as it did pre-2019) from a DII school and has mainly pitched in high A and AA, not looking good in 3 different seasons in AA.

My reasoning for calling Roxby a bag of balls is exactly what LHG said. Undrafted with bad numbers so far in his minor league career. There is nothing that I see that indicate he is anything other than low minor depth (Aka “a bag of used batting practice balls”)

Yeah…

There was just an oil/water relationship between him and BoMel, it seems. It happens, and no one person is necessarily the REASON for that personality clash.
I wonder how much different Taylor is compared to Tyler. How is it that Melvin kept one in high leverage spots but regulated the other to the back of the pen? I mean, look at their numbers (guess which is which from the numbers below without looking):
70.1 IP, 2.82 ERA, 1.038 WHIP
60 IP, 2.40 ERA, 1.250 WHIP

I assume the relationship dates back to their SD days. That’s why I think there is just some kind of personality clash.

Nothing like trading someone who is very good in the majors for someone who is dogshit in the minors and we included $6M in that deal too. It makes no sense. We could have actually gotten a mediocre prospect for him with no money included.
