I agree, this was my earlier query about what this means to Flores. If it was Soler's bat but as an everyday player, it would be a significant add. But another defensive liability DH? Not sure that moves the needle much unless it leads to another trade for an actual Giant's need.
I agree with this. That said, I’d guess Flores will get spot 1B starts (maybe a handful at 3B) and then Soler may get some spot starts in LF if we have a groundball friendly pitcher on the mound. I think one of our OF’s is gone via trade, probably Conforto.

Small but significant correction to some of what’s been reported: Otto Lopez, whom the Giants acquired this morning, still has a minor league option. That’ll help a lot with the opening-day roster flexibility.

Seems like he has an OK bat. I am guessing he was hurt last season? He has exceeded his rookie qualification despite only having 10 career MLB ABs.

Toronto's Charlie Culberson
I wonder if he can pitch too

According to Cot's, the Giants have committed about $210.5M against the CBT cap following the Soler signing. This gives them roughly $26.5M remaining below the $237M CBT threshold.

So we paid $3M to get rid of Strip and $6M to get rid of Meetch.

Wonder how much to get rid of Forto?

In every season since 2015 — every season — Soler has had one of the best exit velocities in baseball. In his worst season for exit velocity relative to the rest of the league, he was in the 94th percentile, and he still hit 36 homers. He’s someone who is very, very different than what the Giants have been featuring over the last several seasons.

The Giants should not play Soler in the outfield. This was the same mandate that existed for Pederson last season, however, and he still got 208 innings as a defender, which is about 209 too many. It’s easy to say that Soler should be a dedicated DH, but then a regular outfielder shows up to the ballpark with an ingrown toenail and the next thing you know, you’re giving the last rites to a ball dude because someone hit a routine pop fly in Soler’s direction.

I don't think anyone is arguing that he doesn't have legit power. The problem is highlighted in what you wrote, he is a DH on a team full of guys who should be DHing (okay, a slight exaggeration but it illustrates a point). The fact that he bumps Flores, probably the 2nd best power guy on this team, from getting ABs really erodes the value he brings to the club with his bat.

It's more than a slight exaggeration in Wilmer's case. He's roughly league average defensively, especially at 1b. Last year he was -0.3 dWAR and 2.6 WAR overall. I don't think, if he hits as he did last year, that he'll be on the bench much. That said, he won't be DHing as much either. I'm not terribly concerned about his defense. If they trade Forto, I'm kinda ok with most of the defense. Wilmer, LWJ, Tyro, Lucy, Schmitt, JDD are all competent or better IF. Lee, Yaz, Slater, Ramos all competent or better OF. Bailey is a plus defender.

Bring me Monty and let's go.

I don't really think -0.3 dWAR is league average but that may be quibbling a bit. So if Flores gets more playing time at 1st base, that means less playing time for Wade. Not sure that is such a good idea either. When trying to build a better team, is it really a good idea to sign someone who will displace the top 2 hitters in terms of OPS+ from 2023?

Defense, we shall see. It could be okay, it could be disastrous. Maybe if Schmitt takes over at 3rd base and plays up to expectations, the defense will be good there. Maybe Davis improves. Maybe Chapman signs and delivers on his promise. For shortstop, it could be rough. Estrada has gotten better at 2nd so maybe there is some hope there. First base will probably be okay. Catcher should be locked down as long as Bailey is starting. Outfield, I think, could be okay. So maybe I overreacted on defense.

And yes, let's get Montgomery. We need a starting pitcher and he is the best option, in my mind, left on the market.

Is it a good idea to sign someone with a superior power bat who may take some ABs away from two good but not great hitters? Yes, yes it is. LWJ can play OF, Wilmer can play 2B or 3B. Not above average defensively but they won't hurt you there either. Moreover, it seems unlikely that we get 150+ games out of Soler, but we can hope. All in all, you've got plenty of ABs for everyone who hits.

Totally agree on Monty.

Brisbee on the FA market now:

when it comes to players like Jordan Montgomery, whom FanGraphs projects to have an ERA that’s not much lower than Keaton Winn, they’re not going to pay Scott Boras prices. The only players you mentioned who have actual star potential are Blake Snell and Cody Bellinger, and nobody would be surprised if they were absolute albatrosses a third of the way into their deals.

Let's say that's a fair take on how FZ is approaching the market. Maybe he should pivot to Chappy?

I don't know man, I like Monty. I'm thinking the projection is understating his impact.

More Brisbee:

A huge difference with the Giants compared to the Padres is that they don’t have a Kim or a Soto to extend. They’ve already locked up Webb, so who’s the next big extension decision? Camilo Doval? Kyle Harrison? They can afford to screw up at least one deal to a player you mentioned. My guess is they’ll get one of those players, and that it’ll be Matt Chapman.

Ugh...I wish I hadn't eaten that bagel

Exactly, much better to have cash, cap headroom, and freedom to make roster changes should a good opportunity arise. Unless there's a serious upgrade to the status quo, keep your powder dry and invest in the minors.

My WAG projection for the 26 man:

C - Bales, Murph
IF - LWJ, Wilmer, Tyro, Lucy, JDD, Fitz
OF - Lee, Yaz, Slater, Ramos, Sabol
SP - Spider, Monty, Harry, Hicks, Winn
RP - Camilo, Taylor, Tyler, Jax, Beck, Walker, Miller
DH - Soler

This assumes:
1. We get Monty
2. We trade Forto and Bart
