By the way, Soler provides a need in that he brings power but lacks a position where there is a clear need. He is a poor outfielder (we already have those) and a DH (we have plenty of those as well) who, I hope, brings his 2023 bat and not the 2021 or 2022 versions. Locking him into a 3 year deal seems like a bad idea, considering his age and streaky career. Hopefully, he figured something out last year and it sticks for at least the first 2 seasons.
The player, I think, who suffers the most from this is Wilmer Flores. He isn't that good defensively. However, he has probably the best bat, outside of maybe Soler now, on the team. If Soler gets the majority of ABs at the DH, Flores is forced into platoons at 1st and 3rd for scattered playing time. Does that mean less Wade (also one of the better bats on the team) and Davis? Do we want Flores playing regularly at 3rd base? Does the Giants trade Flores? What would we get back in exchange for him? I'm not really sure Soler really helps the team that much.
