By the way, Soler provides a need in that he brings power but lacks a position where there is a clear need. He is a poor outfielder (we already have those) and a DH (we have plenty of those as well) who, I hope, brings his 2023 bat and not the 2021 or 2022 versions. Locking him into a 3 year deal seems like a bad idea, considering his age and streaky career. Hopefully, he figured something out last year and it sticks for at least the first 2 seasons.

The player, I think, who suffers the most from this is Wilmer Flores. He isn't that good defensively. However, he has probably the best bat, outside of maybe Soler now, on the team. If Soler gets the majority of ABs at the DH, Flores is forced into platoons at 1st and 3rd for scattered playing time. Does that mean less Wade (also one of the better bats on the team) and Davis? Do we want Flores playing regularly at 3rd base? Does the Giants trade Flores? What would we get back in exchange for him? I'm not really sure Soler really helps the team that much.

He doesn’t cost much (14M AAV), and it isn’t like they are spending that money elsewhere anyway. But this was my concern when the rumors broke that we were looking at him. He is a very minor incremental improvement to an already crowded segment of the team.

One thing he could improve, that I didn't think about, is his right handed bat may give the lineup better chances for success against lefties. Still, the improvement, considering where he slots, feels very incremental, and, considering the build of this team, it doesn't do enough to make the team much better than a .500 club, in my opinion.

Might be tough for me to get confirmation this late tonight but Susan is a pro’s pro so take this as gospel. Giants appear to have the right-handed pop they lacked. Just my speculation but this would seem to set up a trade with Conforto, Davis or both on the move.

I hope that it is Conforto. I have more hope that Davis can rebound than Conforto.

Unless there is still a trade to come or we get Monty. Not sure I expect either at this point.

I hope we get Montgomery but we'll see. He's available but so is Snell and Chapman. I expect the Giants to sign one of the three, just to make sure FZ doesn't completely eat his words, again, about the offseason.

Taking at bats away from Flores is not a good thing. I hope we don’t trade him because of this move. Conforto would be my pick, but don’t see how that will give more at bats to Flores. I suppose he could share DH and 3rd base duties but I would prefer he would get full playing time.

If Conforto is traded it would complete my desire of getting rid of the undesirables:

I agree, this was my earlier query about what this means to Flores. If it was Soler's bat but as an everyday player, it would be a significant add. But another defensive liability DH? Not sure that moves the needle much unless it leads to another trade for an actual Giant's need.

If we sign Monty, that really isn’t a bad off season considering how many players didn’t want to play for us

It's pretty clear hitters don't want to come as FAs and why should they, considering the park factors?
