Losing Asham isn't a major deal for #Penguins. Losing Neal (40 goals) is. #Flyers #Penguins

Very insightful, Sam. Now we know

One game for Neal?

That's what I expected, but it's still bullshit.

Torres makes a habit of throwing high elbows, charging, jumping into hits, head shot after head shot, and getting slapped on the wrist, and now a guy is in an ambulance because of it... does the league have any idea how much bad blood this builds up in the locker rooms? They have to, right? They have to know that this will boil over, and due to the instigator rule when it finally DOES boil over it's not going to be a good old fashioned line brawl, it's going to be a disgusting ugly display of stickwork, muggings, and cheap play a la Isles/Pens debacle. The sad thing is when the Phoenix Chicago thing comes to a head, maybe later in the series, maybe next season, the suspensions doled out will blow away anything Torres gets. They could just avoid this shit by making Torres aware that this play isn't accepted, by sending a message... two years ago would have been a good place to start. Now it's too late. They can give him ten games, twenty, whatever, but what's done is done and now Hossa is in an ambulance, and more than likely sometime next year some street thug in a Blackhawks sweater is going to get called up from the A to jump some random Yotes player, and it's going to be ugly. The league wonders why the players resort to vigilante street justice... the players don't respect each other, filthy plays don't warrant any REAL punishment, and the instigator penalty makes it hard for guys to just blow off steam and beat the crap out of someone. Something's got to give.

Oh great, now four for cross checking someone in the throat, dropping him, and punching away? The league discipline makes me sick, but it wouldn't be an issue if they players would just treat each other with a slight modicum of respect. I'd rather see all of this after the whistle scrum stuff that's happening right now in Chicago, and maybe a few fights break out than for cheap shot after cheap shot leading to other cheap shots. Bettman, if you're watching, don't be surprised if a player on your pet project gets destroyed in a very filthy way tonight or sometime soon, and don't act like it's some random act of violence. You're losing control of your league.

Watch the video, guys. Shanahan gives a good breakdown.

Puck turns over and Neal changes direction to follow the play. Couturier also changes direction, but is watching the puck. It's the same scenario as Steckel on Crosby. Unavoidable contact.

Usually if you change direction and a guy surprises you, you lower your center of gravity, crouch, drop your shoulder... that's the instinct. It looked like Neal got real high, jumped into it.

Except that Neal is looking right at him and made no attempt to let up, in fact leaping, which makes it worse.

There are two possible reactions. I've seen (and done) both.

When you jump straight up (or as straight up as your momentum allows) you are more able to "fall off" the contact, which reduces the violence of the collision.

You see the jump and turn reaction a lot from football players, for example, who turn into an unexpected collision.

Actually, I jump to avoid contact with people when I'm walking all the time. If I'm, for example, looking away, and then all of a sudden I look in front of me and I'm on a collision course with someone, I jump up and to the side and spin (much like Neal did, at least from my observation) in order to minimize contact.
