Game Thread: Seahawks vs Lions Week 2

Eh with JSN it's 2 games... he still has as many targets as Metcalf (tied 2nd most on the team), I'm not too concerned about that. JSN could go off at any point with what I'm seeing and Geno spread the ball around beautifully yesterday which is Waldron's system - it's not a force it to this guy system.

As for Witherspoon, saw some good and bad yesterday. Guy does know how to tackle, maybe he can teach the rest of the secondary (Diggs has looked horrible this year and Woolen could use a tackling clinic). I did like that when he was beat on the flicker he recognized it right as it happened, was pissed (you could see him basically say "FUCK" after he turned around) and then actually caught up to the receiver, it was just too late.

Still would've rather had Carter, but it's what it is.

Having missed all of preseason and Week 1 of the regular season with a hamstring injury, Devon Witherspoon was ready to go in his debut. He was one of only four Seahawks defensive players to play all 66 snaps on Sunday, alongside Bobby Wagner, Quandre Diggs, and Julian Love. Witherspoon had 5 tackles, a pass defensed on 4th down, and some ups and downs that you should expect from a debutant who didn’t really have a training camp.

Woolen's injury was likely a factor but looks like he was the top corner.

Carroll just mentioned that there were a lot of plays that you didn't see stat wise that Witherspoon caused due to his coverage... For example, he said quite a few times the QB's 1st read was the receiver that Witherspoon was covering but didn't elect to throw to that receiver because Witherspoon had him covered... Instead went to a different option...

He mentioned when you have a "Potential" lockdown corner like that, the pressures on the QB will come because it will force the QB to go to his next read giving the DL more time to put pressure on the QB... He mentioned that Witherspoons coverage in the 2nd half allowed the DL to get some pressure on Goff... He said Witherspoon was starting to get into a groove...

Carroll said that he was very pleased with the way Witherspoon played w/out any training camp under his belt...

We've had bad draft classes as well as good ones. Last year was amazing, and this might end up being the same but it's simply way too early to tell.

I love how Carroll never gets negative when talking about his guys. That positivity, in my opinion, has A LOT to do with why Russ was still so highly regarded by the general public when we traded him to Denver. Without that positivity, there is no way we're getting the trade haul we did, which then ultimately led to our extra draft picks, including Witherspoon, who has now played ONE SINGLE GAME. He was also one of only four Seahawks who played every snap on defense, which is very encouraging for a first professional game and he played well. I think it's safe to say that professional athletes get even better after their first ever game played.

Seattle's D still looks terrible. 3 forced turnovers to our 0 and we barely squeaked out the win (because if Lions win the coin toss they probably win).

I know the Lions are a decent team, so a win is a win, but it seems like unless we score 30 every game and Geno plays lights out football, we're losing. Will be really interesting to see how we handle the Panthers and their crap offense. Hopefully we get Mafe back quickly, Taylor seems lost out there.

Thats on the offense FYI, when you get 3 ( actualy 5 ) TO and don't score that happens. Had the Hawks Defense not forced those TO and TO on downs we lose this game 100%. With the chances they had this offense should have been over 40 points in regulation. Those Turn over on downs are just like a normal TO so like I said thats like the defense giving the offense 5 extra possessions and minus 5 chances for the opponents offense to score.

Where is that coming from? ( Woolen could use a tackling clinic ) he has been one of our better tackling CB and had zero issues in tackling last season. You are grasping at straws. Now Taylor and Love yeah those two couldn't tackle a 5 year old. Our Dline is having issues sliding off people and just like every other year Brooks ends up tackling people 5-10+ yards down the field because of bad angles. Way to many missed tackles and even BOBBY had a couple this game. I was shocked to see him slide off people. I think the tackling issue by some ( Not all ) is directly caused by no preseason play for them and the extreme lack of contact in Practices now because of stupid NFL rules.

Woolen was not great at tackling last year, that's where that comes from. I mean he's not Asante Samuel bad, but he could use a bit of help. I'm not saying it's a liability, but Witherspoon just has far better mechanics. It'd be awesome if he can teach them to Woolen which would make him borderline unstoppable.

Don't base your BS off 1 and 1/2 games when NO ONE not even Bobby seems to be able to tackle right now. The tackling on this team is broken but as they play more games i expect better results.

He had a lot of tackles because he's the fastest player on that defense..

Although you might be right.. he had a similar missed tackle percentage as Surtain/Gardner, etc.. I might be drinking too much of the media Kool Aid.. still, Witherspoon does look solid as a tackler, I still think our secondary could benefit a bit from him.

Yes... Outside of the flee flicker, which he'll learn from, I thought he played a solid game for his debut... And to play every single snap on defense was pretty admirable as well... Especially since we needed him to with Woolen out...

I was very surprised that we took a DB over Jalen Carter, whom I wanted badly but i'm not going give up on allowing Witherspoon to prove us wrong... If he turns out to be a very good corner, then it was a helk of a pick....

I'd rather listen to someone always be positive than listen to someone who is always negative... Who ya going to respect more? I'm sure behind closed doors Carroll has 1 on 1 conversations with players/coaches critiquing their play and coaching while providing feedback...

I like the fact that Carroll doesn't throw his players under the bus in the media like Sean Payton does w/ his staff/players...
It just came out today and basically Payton said if Russ doesn't get sharper getting the plays in the huddle and to the LOS, he may be implementing wristbands... Not sure if that was a shot at Russ or not but I wouldn't be too happy if I was RW...

I think it's interesting that Carroll shouldered the blame when our offense didn't get the plays out on time forcing a delay of game or having to burn a TO when it could've been RW that was the problem... Everyone thought Hackett was the problem last year when that happened and now it's happening again with Sean Payton... There is one common denominator with all 3 coaches and it's RW... There has to be a time when RW begins taking the hit for being sacked so much instead of his OL... He was sacked 7x's yesterday...

Like someone said earlier, looks like Carroll hid a lot of RW's issues so much that he looked better than he actually was... That's a coach who has his players backs...

Witherspoon was one of the most physical CB's in college, He plays like a strong safety but has the coverage skills of a CB. He also gets hit with PI a lot because he is so physical. I 100% expected him to be a good/great tackler coming out of college thats something he was VERY good at. He isn't just a good CB he is a hitter also! I think to many on here forget that part of his game. He is a more skilled Brandon Browner minus Browners size.

"Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon is an aggressive, physical cornerback with man coverage skills and ball production, making him a mighty fine NFL draft prospect who can serve in a high-impact role. Witherspoon is very combative at the catch point and is eager to transition into a tackler’s role, offering an NFL team a viable inside or outside option at the next level."

This is why they looked at sliding him inside because he is a menace as a tackler and is so aggressive he fits that role of playing inside very well. It wasn't because he sucked as a CB. I have zero doubts he can do a great job shutting down big physical TE's because he is very physical himself. He will be a HUGE asset on this team.

Payton seems like a grumpy old man at this point who hasn't been laid in the last few years.

Not sure why he's throwing his whole team under the bus. I understand as a head coach you need to be touch and call out guys when they're not producing, but doing it on national TV is not the best place.

Either way I hope he keeps it up. If we can get the #1 3rd round pick that'd be great!

I also think the team should have taken Carter over Witherspoon. Sometimes you have to take a chance on someone like that. But I don't really have a problem with Witherspoon or JSN as picks outside of not taking Carter. If they really didn't think Carter was worth the risk then taking Witherspoon made sense as there were no other defensive players worth taking at 5. With regards to JSN, I'm not really sure who they could have taken that would have been a dramatic impact player on defense. Mazi Smith? Brian Bresee? Maybe but far from a lock. There is a reasonable argument that, given the structure of this team, we are better off building an elite offense and hoping you get a little lucky on D.

Witherspoon is a physical beast at CB and was one of the reasons he was drafted by the Hawks. I said they were looking for a Maxwell type physical CB to play the other side from Woolen when the Hawks drafted him.

Ah, my concern was never about Witherspoon being a solid tackler... he was great in College. My concern was moreso about his size and the fact we took a corner #5 overall to potentially play a nickel CB position
