Ideally it would be great to sign a marquee FA like Statsny or Vanek. With Boyle walking, buyout Havlat and Stuart, and moving Niemi they have the cap room, but doubt DW agrees on term that these guys could get. Also a trade for Weber with a package based around Pavelski, much rather move JT, but I don't see that happening even in the most ridiculous of scenarios.

I think a highly unlikely borderline ridiculous team, yet plausible I would like to see would look something like this.

Buyout Havlat and Stuart

Sign vanek or Statsny

Sign Downie

Sign Elliot or Gustavsson

Trade Pavelski, Wingles, Tennyson and a 2nd for Weber

Trade Niemi prospect/pick maybe to Winnipeg for Enstrom

Vanek/Hertl/Thornton/Burns
Marleau/Couture/Nieto
Torres/Hertl/Statsny/Downie
Shepperd/Desjardins/Kennedy/Burish/Brown

Vlasic/Weber
Enstrom/Braun
Irwin/Demers

Stalock
Elliot/Gustavsson

I know ita called ridiculous trade thread, but good flippin god man, you kept all the garbage on the team and got rid of the good parts. No way you get rid of Pavs yet keep thornton and marleau.

Think you missed it, but I was trying to keep it plausible, though still incredibly unlikely, not what I would ideally like to see happen. I could say trade Thornton to Tampa for Drouin and trade Marelau+ for Yandle, but those trades have 0% chance of happening. My scenario isn't going to happen either, but it COULD happen. Thats why I tried to replace Pavelski through FA which is possible due to cap room made from buyouts and letting Boyle walk as well as upgrade the defense. I would absolutely trade Pavelski for Weber and even if Thornton or Marleau were able to get moved, there is no way they would fetch the return Pavelski can.

I don't know if you would find a Sharks fan who would prefer getting rid of Pavelski over either Thornton or Marleau, but I would put the betting odds on Pavs being the most likely to be traded. Not because he needs to go, but because the value he brings back and the difficulty in trading Thornton and Marleau. They re-signed together with full NMC in January passing up UFA. Now if DW wants to turn around and trade 2 guys who have routinely taken shorter deals and less money to stay in San Jose and just passed up the opportunity to go wherever they wanted, then good luck to him. I have a hard time seeing either wave the clause unless it was the exact situation they wanted. Could you see Marleau accepting a trade anywhere besides LA or Anaheim? Maybe Thornton is more willing to move to the East to a contender, but even if he were willing to go who would take him? Boston? Montreal? I doubt he would go there, Pittsburgh can't afford him. I just don't see a fit for him on a contender and why would he go to any team unless they have a legitimate shot at the cup? I wouldn't want to trade either within the division. I doubt either would fetch the type of return that would make it worthwhile because of these circumstances. We will see what happens this summer, but do you honestly think they are more likely to get traded over Pavelski or can you think of a trade that makes any sense?

Right now, the sharks have 13M on the cap next year.

havlat = +5
niemi= +3.8
stuart = +3.6

Trading those three for some picks/prospects/packaged with a bigger deal would give them roughly 25M.

sign stalock = -1.5
sign demers = -2
sign wingels = -3
sign shep = -1.5

leaves them with 17M under the cap. That's a huge amount to play with especially after signing all your RFA's and having a full forward crew signed and needing just a back up goalie and one or two top pairing Dmen.

If trading jumbo or patty is not an option, then trading pavs or burns becomes the next best choice.

If they deal both and land weber, and either yandle, J. Schultz, hedman, etc, then they will not be adding much to the cap. They will still have some 15M left, with a complete, and vastly unpgraded D. I would love to see dougie then take a run at stastny, even if the number is 5 years, 35M. No thanks on Vanek. However, stastny gives you a nice replacement for pavs, he's a bit younger, and would fit in nicely in SJ with his speed.

While I still dont think the sharks can win a cup while jumbo is on the team, at the very least turning boyle into weber, pavs into stastny, and Burns/stuart into Yandle would give the sharks a massively upgraded D without losing all that much up front. One can expect nieto and hertl to develop and maybe a larger role for shep. Add in downie for depth and its not a disaster offseason...

Thonrton, marleau, stastny, couture, Hertl, nieto, wingels, sheppard, Torres, Kennedy, Desi, Downie as your top 11 forwards. Then lets some of the rooks get a shot to fill out the roster for another 1-2M.

On D though:
Weber, Yandle, Vlasic, Braun, Demers, Irwin would be a monster upgrade. They would have two solid PP QB's with a shutdown element in braun and vlasic.

If we are stuck with Jumbo-patty, then I would prefer the above scenario, which at least makes the D suddenly one of the best in the league while still maintaining a solid forward crew. In addition, they would actually still have some 5-7+M under the cap with that lineup.

meh... Marchand doesn't excite me at "Marleau Levels"... he looks to be around a high 20/low 30s goal scorer who hasn't really done a lot in the playoffs. If they want to trade Pavs for him then I would say its a go - but we need to get more than this guy for Patty.

No way would I trade Pavelski for him either.
If they trade Pavs, gonna get a hell of a lot more back than Marchand.
You'll never find a better time to trade Pavs then right now....the perfect sell high scenario.
Some people have mentioned using him as part of a package to get Weber, and I'm all for that. If not, if I'm trading Pavs, I ask for a very good NHL player, top prospect, and high pick in return.
