I keep reading or seeing on various sports sites regarding our Bears how it might be difficult to keep Velus on the roster this year. And I'm honestly scratching my head wondering why there should be any doubt. A year ago I might have agreed that our offense didn't have the luxury of carrying a 'gadget' player on the roster. But we do this year and I can't think of a better candidate for this role than Velus. He's been impressive for most of this preseason, but against the Chiefs he was killing it. Yes, he was running against the opposing team's scrubs, but then again he had scrubs blocking for him. That 39 yard TD run was a thing of beauty.

Let's remember, he's the fastest player on the team - yes, faster than our other bullet, Tyler Scott. But he's also strong and is able to play multiple roles. He brings value to our offense. I'll say this much, if we cut him, it will take all of 10 minutes for another club to ink him.
One fumble probation imo.

I think it was between Jones and Wheeler, and wheeler got put on injury designation so he at least does not get cut. Wheeler has alot of speed, also 4.3 but does not have the fumblitis history yet and at least looks like he can block somebody on a blitz. But its just me finding those guys that look good and never make it. I think the injury was the reprieve for Wheeler and Jones.
Its hard to believe I read they are trying to replace Herbert who basically averages almost 5 yards per carry.

Still have 87 on the bears.com roster with the 53 due tomorrow.

They've knocked it down to 78 - from the Sun-Times:

The Bears got their roster down to 78 players Monday by waiving nine: OL Ja’Tyre Carter, OL Jerome Carvin, DL Michael Dwumfour, WR Peter LeBlanc, DL Jaylon Hutchings, WR John Jackson III, S Quindell Johnson, LB Javin White, LB Paul Moala.

The only mild surprise here is Ja’Tyre Carter. Wasn't sure he was gonna make the roster anyway, but I thought he'd at least last until the final cut.

good old days they let the veterans go first so they might catch on somewhere before the teams got all the way down to 53.

I thought Carter would stick around when Borom went down injured.

Kinda sad, but inevitable:

Rypien performed a helluva lot better than I expected when we first signed him. Some team will pick him up.

Rypien and Johnson balled out in the hall of fame game, then two games of no PT. Even when Webster got hurt they did not play Johnson last game. 6'6 220 with decent hands does not have to be a stellar route runner.

They were saying something about a new rule with QB's this year that they were going to be able to keep Austin Reed on the team. I thought that was in addition to Rypien, but I guess they were not able to get enough for Bagent.

Just saw this about that new rule

The emergency third quarterback rule was tweaked earlier this offseason, but on Monday, August 26, clubs were notified that the NFLPA vetoed the change. The previous rule that stated a QB must be on the active 53-man roster to take advantage of the inactive emergency quarterback on game days is back in play.

So main final cuts were Blasingame, Baskerville and Steward. QB rules cost Reed, probably make the practice squad.
Surprise is why did Waitman and Lyons, the backup punter and long snapper make it to final cuts.
What exactly did we see from DeAndre Carter that earned a receiver spot?

The Bears kept two quarterbacks on their roster in Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent; four running backs in D'Andre Swift, Khalil Herbert, Travis Homer and Roschon Johnson.
They kept three tight ends in Cole Kmet, Gerald Everett and Marcedes Lewis; and 10 offensive linemen in Braxton Jones, Darnell Wright, Kiran Amegadjie, Coleman Shelton, Doug Kramer Jr., Teven Jenkins, Nate Davis, Bill Murray, Ryan Bates and Matt Pryor.
The Bears kept six receivers in DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, Tyler Scott, Velus Jones Jr. and DeAndre Carter.
Ten defensive linemen earned roster spots in Montez Sweat, Darrell Taylor, DeMarcus Walker, Daniel Hardy, Austin Booker, Dominique Robinson, Gervon Dexter Sr., Andrew Billings, Chris Williams and Zacch Pickens.
Linebackers who made the 53-man roster were Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, Jack Sanborn, Amen Ogbongbemiga and Noah Sewell.
The Bears kept 10 defensive backs in Blackwell, Kyler Gordon, Jaylon Johnson, Jaylon Jones, Terell Smith, Tyrique Stevenson, Kevin Byard III, Jaquan Brisker, Elijah Hicks and Jonathan Owens.
Their three specialists are kicker Cairo Santos, punter Tory Taylor and long snapper Patrick Scales.

Guessing up to 5 of these guys are not going to be on the team opening day.

I'm understanding that the Bears are going to put Scales on the temp IR and bring one of the LB's, Baskerville back into the 53.

Well if Scales is hurt then it explains keeping the backup long snapper Lyons on for so long. I dont think Kramer, Bates or Shelton are considered long snappers.
They put Borom and Martin on designated to return IR, I think they are only allowed 6 designated to return. Dante Pettis, Wheeler and Webster are on IR with no return designation, so l clearly do not understand the rules. Why keep Pettis around if you cannot activate him this year? Player coach?

I wonder if Poles is considering pursuing any of these recent cuts:

The two that intrigue me are C Ricky Stromberg and DT Siaka Ika, with the latter being the more likely of the two who could land a spot on the team. Apparently Ika never produced like the Browns thought he would when they chose him with the 98th pick in the '23 draft. Maybe the Bears can get him to fulfill his potential, assuming of course they go after him. Likewise with Stromberg, altho we're a bit less in need at this position, but just a bit.

well, Baskerville, Johnson, Reed, Steward are the just missed I guess.

I dont expect Baskerville to be there for long. There are always a player or two just waiting to get poached so they get them a roster spot.
Really did not like the way the bears looked on kickoffs against KC. Either they were bad or KC has already adjusted to the new rules. I am guessing it is more going to be like the bears with Hester on punt returns and starters wanting to be out there. Thats where I expected Baskerville to be. Just does not make sense to have your starting defensive backfield doing that sprint and staying on the field.

Rypien signed by an arch rival:

Whole lot more money to be on the active roster than accept a practice squad deal.

Never really understood the bears bringing him in, just seemed to take playing time away from Bagent and Reed.

I like Herbert but he's awful in pass pro and his ceiling is being a part of a committee. You know we're likely running the ball when he's out there and if not? Chance of a problem occurring.

Rypien signed by an arch rival:

You knew Rypien was going somewhere after such a solid showing in the pre-season. Most years, I would be happy to carry him as our primary backup into the year. Bagent was never going to be usurped, though. The org likes him a lot, and IMO, rightfully so.

Sucks for Hall, he lit it up, but got hurt.
