Welcome back, Murph....

FIRST PITCH: The New York Mets are planning to activate Daniel Murphy off the disabled list prior to Tuesday night's series opener against the Chicago Cubs.

Murphy hasn't played since June 4 because of a strained quadriceps, and could provide a big boost to the Mets' lackluster lineup. He'll be playing third base while David Wright remains out.

The Mets (40-37) have won four in a row, while the Cubs (39-35) have lost five in a row.

Jonathon Niese (3-7, 4.12) starts for New York on Monday, and Kyle Hendricks(2-4, 4.46) starts for Chicago.

Tuesday's news reports:

  • New York City is still buzzing about Steven Matz's fabulous major league debut on Sunday. It wouldn't have happened without the work of former Mets GM Omar Minaya, writes John Harper in the Daily News.
  • Matz's performance has given the Mets' spirits a huge lift, writes Greg Logan in Newsday.
  • The Mets' rotation is now superior to the Philadelphia Phillies' old Big Four ofRoy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt, writes Mike Vorkunov on NJ.com.
  • Some forgettable Mets also had Matz-like debuts, writes Andrew Beaton in the Journal.
  • At the plate, Curtis Granderson has quietly put the Mets on his back, writes Zach Braziller in the Post.
  • The Mets are entering a critical stretch, with their schedule getting very difficult in July, writes Joe Trezza on MLB.com.
BIRTHDAYS: Ron Swoboda turns 71 on Tuesday.

NEW YORK -- The Mets have activated Daniel Murphy from the disabled list for Tuesday's series opener against the Chicago Cubs. Rookie Dilson Herrera has been demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.

Murphy strained his left quadriceps on June 4 at Arizona. He played in four rehab games with Class A St. Lucie.

Murphy should play third base for the Mets for the duration of David Wright's absence, with Ruben Tejadaat shortstop and Wilmer Flores at second base.

Flores, who opened the season at shortstop despite limited range, officially moved to second base in Sunday's series finale against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Mets desperately can use Murphy's bat in the lineup. Before Sunday's seven-run output against Cincinnati in the finale, which included four RBIs from debuting pitcher Steven Matz, the Mets had scored 15 total runs in their previous 10 games.

And now cuddyersucks (who's becoming more worthless by the day it seems) misplays a flyball in LF....Cubs lead 1-0....on a 2 out double that scores Bryant, who walked on 4 straight pitches leading off the inning...lol

FIRST PITCH: After another disheartening loss, the New York Mets will try to break out at the plate Wednesday, and hope for some good news on Michael Cuddyer.

The Chicago Cubs will have star lefty Jon Lester on the mound, but Lester is just 4-6 with a 4.03 ERA on the season, and hasn't won a game since May 16. Bartolo Colon (9-6, 4.89) will start for the Mets.

Cuddyer left Tuesday's game early with a sore left knee, and will undergo an MRI on Wednesday.

Wednesday's news reports:

  • Jonathon Niese pitched beautifully Tuesday, giving up just one run in seven innings. But the Mets were shut out by Kyle Hendricks and three relievers, accumulating just three hits in a 1-0 loss. Read game recaps in the Daily News, Post, Times, Newsday, Journal, Record, NJ.com and MLB.com.
  • Mets manager Terry Collins blew his top following Tuesday night's loss, revealing just how frustrated he's getting by the Mets' lack of offensive production, writes columnist John Harper in the Daily News.

  • Niese and Daniel Murphy, who returned from the disabled list Tuesday and had the Mets' only extra-base hit, have often been used as trade bait. But it would be a mistake for the Mets to undervalue them, writes Ken Davidoff in the Post.

  • The Mets aren't in a hurry to trade Niese, writes columnist David Lennon inNewsday.

  • The Mets and Cubs have taken different routes on the road back, writes columnist Tyler Kepner in the Times.

  • From the bloggers ... Mets Report projects the team's bullpen when Jenrry Mejia returns. ... Faith and Fear tells what it was like to unofficially attempt to "Beat the Booth."

Dammit...
maybe as a precaution they ought to sit him until after the All-Star break.....lol

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets got some good news on the injury front Wednesday, for a change.

Outfielder Michael Cuddyer, who left Tuesday night's game early with a sore left knee, does not have a serious ailment, it appears. After undergoing an MRI, Cuddyer was given a shot and could be available again as soon as Thursday, according to manager Terry Collins.

"He had like the little covering inside the knee, there's a little swelling in there, there's a little strain, so they injected it," Collins said. "He should be fine."

Given that the Mets have a day game Thursday and then are flying to the West Coast, don't be surprised if Collins holds Cuddyer out until at least the series opener in Los Angeles on Friday.

John Mayberry Jr. is playing left field and batting fifth in place of Cuddyer on Wednesday.

I like having Parnell back and it was good to see Niese have another solid outing. What has happened to Duda? Come on man, we need you.

I know he won't give it much, if any thought...because he's TC after all...but Duda should be dropped down in the order to 6th or 7th until he finds his stroke again....
