Revis would be awesome to have. But Like stated, worried what this does to our future extensions. But I trust our FO.

More on the Cullen Jenkins front: The Packers, who Jenkins reportedly may have some desire to return to, are bringing in Chris Canty for a visit today and tomorrow.

Does anyone know if pro day times are electronic or hand-timed? Montee Ball ran a 4.46 40 at his pro day.

Pro Day 40s are almost always hand-timed unless otherwise noted. Although, I'm sure there have been instances where players have ran an electronically timed 40 and it was not noted as such.

Thanks, Chris. I've read the articles on Montee Ball's pro day time and that UNI receiver's (Sinkfield) 4.19 40. I was looking for any mention of electronic timing and I couldn't find any. You have to take these 40 times with a grain of salt, I guess. It's hard to believe that Montee Ball is a full two-tenths of a second faster than at the combine.

Always have to factor in the surface in which a player ran on and any weather conditions as well. It also helps to know all about a school's pro day location because many schools are known for their surfaces - fast, slow, or neutral. With many schools choosing to upgrade their facilities lately, a large number of schools are choosing to install faster FieldTurf surfaces for their athletes. Note: Indy's new surface is similar to what MANY schools run on.

In the end, I am obsessed with video of any player running their 40s, 20s, and 10s. If you're going to put major stock into a 40 time I feel it's quite necessary to watch how a player ran that 40 before you read too much into it.

Akers officially canned. Hello $3M.

Kicker David Akers released by 49ers

Akers' agent, Jerrold Colton, wrote in an email to USA TODAY Sports that his client has no intention of retiring.

According to Colton, Akers had another "minor surgical procedure" within the last month to further address the lingering hernia issue that plagued him throughout 2012.

I really wish Tennessee would move on from Bironas. Hanson would be a nice short term solution but he'll never depart Detroit, in my opinion.

Pozz what does the draft look like for kickers? I know there was talk of us looking at the kicker from Florida but I literally know nothing about him. That is one position that have always paid very little attention to.

Dumervil may be available wouldn't mind him as a pass rush specialist. Also I know Denver ran a 3-4 recently but was Dumervil hurt when they ran it?

Elvis Dumervil pay cut wanted by Denver Broncos - NFL.com

I wouldn't mind him as a pass-rush specialist either. The problem with that is Dumervil is only 29 and in his prime and will get a huge, long-term contract if he's cut. That would be WAY too much money for a pass-rush specialist.

I'd much rather go after John Abraham, who won't get a long-term deal and would benefit from not playing every down.

Well, I guess Miami has their eyes on Mike Wallace. The Niners need to swoop in and steal him at the last minute like they did Jim Harbaugh. :)

True but he hasn't been the same since he got injured maybe he can be had on a one year deal especially if he is not cut till June

Niners in the kicker market
March, 7, 2013 12:28PM ET
By Tim Kavanagh | ESPN.com

UPDATE: ESPN NFC West blogger Mike Sando checked in with his thoughts on who the 49ers should target to upgrade their placekicking production. Find his thoughts at the bottom of the post.

---

In a move for which some San Francisco 49ers fans were calling months ago, the club has elected to release veteran placekicker David Akers. Akers finished the regular season 29-of-42 (69.0 percent), which prompted the club to bring in some other options for a competition. The Niners stuck with Akers, however, and he was 4-of-5 in the postseason. Nevertheless, the decision has been made.

Unlike last offseason, there weren't any placekicking specialists franchised this offseason (though the Colts did tag P Pat McAfee, who does their kickoffs and who some believe could become their primary placekicker as well), and there's an impressive group hitting unrestricted free agency: Olindo Mare, Phil Dawson, Shayne Graham, Lawrence Tynes, Nate Kaeding, Josh Brown and Mike Nugent (though the Bengals are expected to re-sign one of the latter two).

Mike Sando
Sizing up options for 49ers at kicker

"Rookie kickers have made 86.7 percent of field goal attempts over the past five seasons. Veteran kickers have made 83 percent over the same period. That is something to keep in mind when wondering what veteran kicker the San Francisco 49ers might pursue after releasing David Akers this week. While the 49ers likely will sign a veteran, they should consider using one of their league-high 12 draft choices -- a total expected to rise when the NFL distributes compensatory selections -- for the best rookie kicker they can find."

Pozz what does the draft look like for kickers? I know there was talk of us looking at the kicker from Florida but I literally know nothing about him. That is one position that have always paid very little attention to.

I don't have a background working with or studying kickers so I tend to lean towards numbers, noteworthy moments/stretches, and emotions when looking at kickers rather than anything you see in the real scouting world. Therefore, my opinion is worth alot less than many others.

My sense is that it's a decent to good overall class but nobody I've seen looks like they'll be pushing for future All Pro or definite, without a shadow of a doubt 12-15 year NFL kicker. I'd be very nervous spending a 6th or 7th on anyone this year.

Dustin Hopkins (Florida State) and Caleb Sturgis (Florida) are probably the two names that are ranked most highly by the majority of people who compile rankings. Hopkins is probably rated higher by more people. Sturgis has a background in soccer and is a bit more unconventional, which some coaches think now a days can be beneficial when working with a kicker.

I know I'd have trouble emotionally trusting Hopkins, especially in the clutch given his history but I couldn't tell you if there is anything wrong with him technically when he's put in those moments. It just would scare me emotionally if I saw him as a 49er in those moments given his history. Is that completely fair or justified? At the very least it is somewhat, I think.

I'm not sure you could argue Sturgis is the better option numbers wise but I just like his make-up better than Hopkins, though if I spent more time on it, it's completely possible that I could change my mind. Admitedly, I have not spent the time on it that I maybe should have. Both project to be pretty good as kickoff men, by the way, so they have that going for them as far as draft grades go.

Speaking of make-up. The guy that would probably come next is Brett Maher from Nebraska. I have alot more experience watching him as I am a Huskers fan. I probably like his personality make-up more than the other two but that's probably because I have more experience watching him and seeing how guys around him interact with him. He also punted for the Huskers and was pretty good at it. Some may think that could be a valuable throw in with him if you were to give him a chance instead.

Those would be the three that I would guess have the best chance at getting drafted, though it wouldn't shock me if the first two were the only two to get drafted this year. Others that have an outside chance at either being drafted but probably most likely as an UDFA:

Dan Conroy - Michigan State
Tyler Bitancurt - West Virginia
Brandon McManus - Temple
Anthony Cantele - Kansas State
Jeremy Shelley - Alabama
Drew Alleman - Louisiana State
Matt Weller - Ohio

I wish they would have burned a pick on Alex Henery from Nebraska when he came out a while back. He was one of the most trustworthy kickers I've watched in college football in a long, long time. He struggled early on with the Eagles but eventually picked it up and I think has been outstanding ever since.

Well, he did have 11 sacks last season, which is his 3rd highest total in his career.

If I were Dumervil, I wouldn't sign a 1-year contract.
