Lots and lots of room to pay players. Unfortunately, very few FA hitters worthwhile.

Idea stolen from Baggs article today:

Both Forto and Manea are likely to opt out this winter.

For Forto, the lack of good FAs is going to inflate his market and he'll likely be cut slack for this year since he missed all of 2022. The thinking is that he'll get some team to bite on a multiyear contract. At 31, this will be his last chance to get one.

For Manaea, he'll likely want a clear shot at the starting rotation. He won't get that in SF, nor should he.

This makes me happy.
I am AOK with removing both those “assets” from the ledger.

Right?

Who wouldn't be. I had no idea they were even contemplating opting out. It'd be nice if Haniger got it going this month and became a middle of the order hitter.

Not holding my breath, but hoping.

We should have the SP in 24
We should have the bullpen in 24
We should have the D in 24 with Lucy at SS and Schmitt at 3B

I'm surprised with Conforto and Manaea considering opting out. I would have expected Stripling before Manaea. Manaea's possibility is more shocking because the free agent class is supposed to be deeper with pitching. He may well get lost in the shuffle and end up as a minor league invitee or just in someone's bullpen. His last two years have not been good.

Strip may not opt in, either.

It's a shame that Strip and Manaea pitched so poorly early on. Their poor performance may just be an outlier, but they were moved around from starting to pen and back. Starters need longer rope than that.

It will be interesting if he opts out as well. My main takeaway is that FZ's word cannot be trusted. He says what he thinks needs to be heard at the moment. Kind of fits previous statements he's made and the outcomes of those situations.

I'd be PUMPED if both Strip and Manaea opt out along with Forto.

When it comes to getting ahead in the count, Matos is already elite. Here’s the percentage of pitches seen while ahead in the count, minimum 500 pitches seen:

1. Lars Nootbaar, 33.9 percent
2. J.P. Crawford, 33.3
3. Trevor Larnach, 33.0
4. Aaron Judge, 32.8
5. Juan Soto, 32.7
6. Willie Calhoun, 32.7
7. Brandon Belt, 32.6
8. Luis Matos, 32.4
9. Triston Casas, 32.3
10. Rowdy Tellez, 32.2

Mookie Betts is 11th, with a 32-percent mark, in case you were wondering.
And our old friend, Brandon Belt, ranks just above him. The dude is still injury prone but still producing when he can.

Hjelle has taken some odd turns this year. He began the season with added velocity. But the velocity has dipped over the season, and his ERA has climbed (8.59 with the Giants and 6.33 with the RiverKittens). He's "only" 26 and may have some development left, but this seems like he may do better elsewhere.

I don't get the last listing. Cal Stevenson isn't even in the org any longer.

Rule 5 candidates:

Erik Miller
Tyler Fitzgerald
Kai-Wei Teng
Juan Sanchez
Aeverson Arteaga
Victor Bericoto
Ben Madison
Grant McCray

My guess: we protect Teng, Sanchez, Miller, and maybe McCray

Good candidates, but I wonder if any of them actually NEED protection. I wouldn’t be knocked out of my chair if any of these guys get protected, though (or, conversely, get taken in the draft or traded).
