I do wonder if the Giants will try to sign Imanaga, regardless if they win or lose out on Yamamoto.

Sonny Gray to the Cards 24/2...that's a nice value signing.

I didn't want him, but it's a good move for the Cards.

Cardinals rebuilding their rotation with some aging veterans, thus the value signing (although Gray looks better than the other two guys they signed).

Another Japanese pitcher just posted. This one was not on my radar at all.

I don’t have an opinion on any of the Asian pitchers outside of Yamamoto. Even my opinion of Yamamoto is primarily based on ignorance. It is hard to convert their potential effectiveness.

I have no choice but to trust our FO on their scouting of these guys.

Although not always true, it seems that many players from Japan see similar to slightly lower numbers in the U.S. I'm not too concerned about signing any of these guys but Yamamoto, from what I hear, is the cream of the crop (primarily due to age but also because of his arsenal). However, I too am pretty ignorant of how good these pitchers really are.

He is only 25 throws a 97mph fastball and wins tons. I would really like him on the team

Yamamoto? I don't know of anyone who wouldn't want him on the team. Its going to be hard to get him but the Giants should do everything in their power to do so. FZ has stated that they want to not lose out on a big name FA again. This is the one to not lose out on.

I say sign them all !!!!
That would be an interesting experiment - 3 starting pitchers and a DH all from Japan. That would cost a lot of money though! MLBTR predicts that Imanaga will be signed at approximately 5 year, $85 million (plus a $14 million posting fee), Yamamoto at approximately 9 years, $225 million (plus an unknown posting fee) and Ohtani at 12 years, $528 million. They rank Ohtani as 1, Yamamoto as 3 and Imanaga as 10 on their Top 50 free agents available this offseason. Just signing those 3 would be pretty much unlikely, even for the Dodgers or Yankees, as it could easily cost $86 million in year 1 for those 3 combined.
Uwasawa is probably come in much cheaper but he'll still likely cost something around 5 years, $60 million (probably more). That is $100 million for 4 players. Not likely when the current roster already has $134 million already on the table, unless the ownership group is okay with a payroll in at the same range as the Padres' 2023 payroll.

Well at least kick the tires on all of them.

With so many teams in on Yamamoto, I think even if we offer the most it may not be enough. What’s a couple of million, when you can get on a strong contender or players you can communicate in your own language. If we can just get one of the pitchers it could bolster our chances of getting another Japanese pitcher. I really don’t think we have much of a chance landing Ohtani but at least bid to feint interest so the dodgers pay more.

I don't mind losing out nearly as much as I will be PISSED if we get outbid. Ohtani, Yamamoto...there is NO good reason to be outbid.

Do you think we lose out if we are not outbid? I understand that there are other reasons besides money for a player to go elsewhere. In these cases, do you think a contending team offering slightly less money will land them?

I sure think it is a possibility, so we might have to overpay.

Being on the west coast is in our favor.
Pitching in our park is in our favor.
Not being a strong contender not in our favor.
Apparently not having another Japanese player might hurt us as well.

What else? :hmm:
