Giants picked up their first high impact bat.
Yaisel Puig shouldn't be far behind.

memo to the FO… just don’t panic overpay

develop a young strong core and augment opportunistically

having mediocre dinosaurs clogging the lineup is the ultimate deathnell
I think we need to keep these thoughts in mind as the season rolls on ... if we were to bid on BOTH Ohtani and Yamamoto .... we'd have to bring about 750M - 800M to the plate ... Ohtani will command 500M+ and Yamamoto will be 250+ .... these are some pretty high costs to pick up ..... and it only meets some of our needs

IMHO .... it's not all about the players themselves. There are also some intangibles that a team must have. Not sure what they are exactly ... but I'm sure they are there for those teams that excel .... something like we did in our 107 win season .... something other than a pure talent pool contributes to the ultimate success of the team.

Just one last thought .... for the 2023 season ... The LA Angels had Othani (2023 MVP) and also had Trout for half the season before the wrist injury ..... and they finished 16 games UNDER 500 .... talent is very important .... but it's not the complete picture .... there are other pieces to the puzzle ..

I really believe we are going to be better this season. Just like having a better teacher, manager or parent it makes a major difference. Grumbling from players, discovery of clubhouse activity and their drop off after the all star break showed their was a mis-direction given to the players. I think Melvin and his coaches might be the best acquisitions we will have made for the up coming season.

That is possible but keep this in mind, the first two seasons of Bochy managing the team resulted in worse records than the last year Alou managed. Bochy definitely learned how to manage well the talent he had but it was not an overnight success and he already had some time managing in the big leagues so it wasn't like he was green.

And this is why its hard for me to want to give Ohtani the money he'll require to sign with the team. The Angels are a warning light of the dangers of building around just two players, even if they are the two most talented players in MLB.
The reason I'm so gung ho about Yamamoto, though, is that he is young, yet has a proven track record in Japan already. He seems healthy and so signing him to an 8 year deal gives the team some time to build a legitimate contender around him and Webb. The Giants have room to sign him, produce some solid players from the farm and then sign complimentary players through free agency and/or acquire through trades.

sure, but the Giants need a star or two. They know this. They are going to try and solve that. Everyone agrees on Yamamoto -- he'd be a great acquisition on a long term contract. I don't think they can lose if they get Ohtani either. Say it's 10/500. They make that money back with butts in seats, sales of swag, etc. We saw it with BLB and this is a chance to do the same thing. They didn't win a trophy with Barry (thanks Dusty) but they were RELEVANT and he was must see TV. Ohtani would be the same...especially if he pitches in 2025. I just can't see any downside here. Even if they only get six years of production it'd be a win. With him and Yamamoto I think they'd be well situated to be relevant immediately.

But when Boch came on board, the talent level was leaving. With Melvin, he is coming to a talentless team, so there really isn’t any room to go down.

That is true, but I’m partially looking at the collapse after the all-star break this past season and some of the players speaking out about the club attitude. So we had a decent team that folded for a reason. For whatever reason the players stopped caring about winning for the team and caring more for their stats and playing cards in the clubhouse. I’m going with a new manager with a winning record that will bring this team to where they should be.

The 16 team collapsed under Bochy as well.

How about pitcher Kenta Maeda to lure in Ohtani and Yamamoto. First we would have to make sure Maeda didn’t pick on them when they were younger, but if not then maybe

Do you really see the current ownership doing any more investment into the team if they bring on both Ohtani and Yamamoto (or even if they just bring in Ohtani)? Considering what I've seen the past few seasons, I wouldn't be surprised if this team becomes the early 00s Rangers or the 20s Angels. A superstar with nothing to surround him due to cost constraints. It would be fun to have Ohtani but it would probably get old after a few seasons of .500 level team play.
Hey, maybe the ownership's signing of Ohtani (or both!) would be an indicator that they are all in and will do what it takes to continue to improve the farm, develop the players and get the complementary pieces. I would hope so, especially if Ohtani does sign, but I have my doubts.

Oh, I think that there is room to go down. My point is that Bochy's managerial genius wasn't readily apparent his first couple of seasons as the helm. I'm not counting on Melvin doing much improvement with this squad, as it is currently configured. However, if he does improve this ballclub, I'll be very grateful.

I think Ohtani failing in LAA is because of the teams front offices failings more so than him and are Trout handcuffing them. When they signed Rendon, I remember he said before he was even signed that he was talking about not wanting to play very long. I think the Giants can pay for both Yamamoto and Ohtani and still field a competitive team as long as they don’t pull the purse strings elsewhere like in drafting and development.

Ouch! Currently, there are 8 Japanese players in MLB, 3 of which are currently free agents (Fujinami, Maeda, Ohtani). That puts the following 5 clubs at a hypothetical advantage (although it will be interesting to see just how much this factors in his landing place. I would guess its not a huge requirement):
Boston Red Sox (Yoshida)
Chicago Cubs (Suzuki)
New York Mets (Senga)
San Diego Padres (Darvish)
Toronto Blue Jays (Kikuchi)
Add Detroit Tigers to this list. They just agreed to sign Kenta Maeda for a 2 year deal.
