I'm just not convinced bringing over a hitter from Korea is a good idea. I don't see him being much better than Conforto offensively.
LOL

I screwed up my post. I thought the MLBTR article was about Yamamoto, not Lee.

I also am not overly excited about signing Lee. If it happens, fine, but I just don’t see a worthwhile comp.

Cardinals dominating the 3rd/4th tier starting pitching market. Feels like they are signing the same kind of pitchers that they traded away in July.

To me the same as Chapman, I guess they might help but it will hinder us getting better players. I’m officially scared :ohwell:

Meh.

I WANT the Giants to be kicking lots of tires. Sure, the Chapman rumors are loud, but rumors are just loud jackasses who like to hear themselves talk. Until he is sitting in his presser, it is just noise.

In my mind, the only two worth spending real money on are Ohtani and Yamamoto.

Everyone else is either overpriced, mediocre, or both.

We should not be outbid for either player.

Ohtani is priced outside that realm of “worth it”, imho, but that is just a fair difference of opinion.

Yamamoto is the only guy I REALLY want in this class. Anyone else is just window dressing. Important, but not without warts.

I actually think with our new manager and coaches the players will be better, sadly they may not be with us to prove it.

I wouldn’t mind Yamamoto, Montgomery (assuming he doesn’t want stupid money) and someone like Rhys Hoskins. If he could move Lamonte back to the OF or give us more flexibility to trade an OF’er that might be worth it. Alas, I have no idea how much money Rhys or Montgomery want, but I’d rather give them money than Chapman.

I think we all knew Yamamoto would be in demand. I do find it funny that the agent gave a range of 11 to 14 teams who've already contacted him. Did the phone calls, text and emails get so intense that he lost track? Seems reasonable.
I know that FZ wants to make a splash. He and the ownership, in my opinion, need to make every effort to make Yamamoto that splash. They need to win out on this one. They lose out on him, then they need to take 20 steps back from the free agent market, cool their heads and rationally work through whether any other free agent is worth the asking price.

If we lose out due to money, I think it will say everything we need to know about ownership and Farhan. If he simply wants to play for a winner or a different locale, obviously not much we can do there. If we lose out because of money, I will be very upset and won’t pay any money to go to games for next season.

If he signs somewhere for 8/320 (40 AAV), I will be OK with losing on him.

BIG FAs is not the way become competitive. They are the way to win the pressor, or sometimes to get yourself over the top when you are already competitive. We are not currently competitive, so way overpaying, even for the prize of the class, just doesn’t make sense.

But if the intent of the FO/ownership is to finally land a big name player, he needs to be the one. Yes, he is a pitcher, but he is young, has posted outstanding numbers in Japan and hasn't shown (that I'm aware of) any signs of injury yet. I don't want to see the FO panic and overpay Chapman or Bellinger because they couldn't land Yamomoto.

And I understand that the Giants could still lose out if they offer the most money to him and that, as some point, the highest offer may be too absurd to make. I just don't want to hear that we came in a close 2nd and topping the highest offer wasn't that difficult and then the FO signs Blake Snell to a 6 year deal.

Ouch! Currently, there are 8 Japanese players in MLB, 3 of which are currently free agents (Fujinami, Maeda, Ohtani). That puts the following 5 clubs at a hypothetical advantage (although it will be interesting to see just how much this factors in his landing place. I would guess its not a huge requirement):
Boston Red Sox (Yoshida)
Chicago Cubs (Suzuki)
New York Mets (Senga)
San Diego Padres (Darvish)
Toronto Blue Jays (Kikuchi)

Looks like we have no choice but to sign Ohtani and Yamamoto.

Is there a way to find out if Fujinami and Yamamoto are friends without breaking some baseball rule?

Fujinami was once considered a top prospect in Japan but he never really showed it in the past 10 years and looked awful this year in the big leagues. I wonder how long the Giants would have to keep him to make Yamamoto feel at home.
Of course, there is Shota Imanaga. However, he has not yet been posted by his team, so I doubt the Giants could somehow sign him before Yamamoto is signed (let alone use that signing to show Yamamoto he belongs in SF).
