They are determined by Vegas wanting to make money. The fact that the last 2 teams to be linked to him are the Giants and Pads explain why they have the best odds. I would be shocked if he didn’t sign with the Phils.
Thanks for the explanation. I appreciate it.

I don’t think signing him will handcuff the team that much moving forward. The tax ceiling keeps moving up and income keeps increasing exponentially. And the Giants are a top 5 $$ org. They can certainly afford it. This situation reminds me quite a bit of Bonds in 93. And that was one of the best FA signings in the history of sports.

So does Harper want to try to be in discussions with Mays, McCovey, Bonds, Cepeda and Ott or with Schmidt, and... Luzinski??
Richie Ashburn, Steve Carlton, and Robin Roberts say "hi."

Well...yes, and no. The lines in Vegas are designed to get equal money on both sides. That's how Vegas makes money. They take my 100 and your 100 and give the winner 190. The 10 is their "vig." So, you're right that the lines are designed to make Vegas money.

However, they are not arbitrary lines. They are based on public perception and adjusted to track that. They are a proxy for "conventional wisdom." And the studies show that the general betting public is pretty good at determining eventual winners. So when the Giants are 1-1 to get Harper what that line tells us is that the general betting public (proxy for baseball fans) think that we have a 50/50 shot.

Long rant short: I wouldn't dismiss public perception so easily.

He actually hit better on the road than home last year. He slashed - .291/.354/.386 in 2018 in road games. However, it was quite the opposite in 2017. He had a decent year that season but his road numbers were not that good - .279/.302/.405. That lines up with 2016 - .210/.234/.298 on the road. The trend line looks good but 2018 looks a bit like a fluke (his home numbers at Coors were much better in 2016 and 2017). You take the three year average and his road slash from 2016-2018 is .266/.338/.353. That's basically what Duggar did in 2018, with a little more on base and a little less power.

Not surprised. He has been rumored to the Giants for years.

That said, he is well past his prime.

THAT said, I think we just signed our opening day starting RFer.

Lame. I'd be okay with him as the 4th outfielder but I'd rather see Williamson out there (unless he is not healthy enough to play).

If Parra starts, he will be in Right with Mac in Left.

I am not impressed. I guess he is replacing Hanson? Hanson is no game changer, but he is probably the only speed on the roster.

The only difference I see between the two is that Hanson is younger and faster and cheaper. Other than that, nothing.

What is the point of transactions for the sake of tinkering? It adds nothing and sometimes subtracts. In my opinion, dumb.

The Beane is strong in this one...

The rumor now is that the deal is a minor league one with an invitation to spring. That makes me feel a bit better about it. Guaranteeing him a roster spot seems ridiculous when he doesn't really improve the team at all from what is currently configured.

It still is not definite that Solarte is on a minor league deal, but it believed to be so. I don’t see any confirmation on Gentry’s deal, but it looks like he is on a minor league deal as well.

I don’t sweat minor league deals. Those are zero risk agreements that just give the team more options.

In theory, yes. However, I'm concerned the Giants just use them as a limbo status for guys they want on the roster but use the month and a half to sort through which guys they least one on the 40 man and/or hope someone can land on the injured list. I know, I'm being cynical and I should give the new regime time to show they handle veterans vs "rookies" better, but I have my doubts.

The term "versatility" is used much too lightly here. He's pretty bad defensively all over.
I don't know why these kind of "versatile" players are valued when they bring nothing good with their "versatility".
