I was "stuck" because I had to be admitted to the hospital and have an emergency operation, followed by 8 days "at home" (where I was staying) in bed, 20/24. And yet, it still isn't the worst trip I've ever been on in my life, believe it or not. (The hospital staff were amazingly good and highly qualified - my surgeon was one of the top specialists in France in his field - if it had to happen, I "lucked out" that it happened when and where it did. Seriously, you don't want some random newly graduated resident mucking around inside your eyeball with a laser scalpel. Not to mention the price difference ... two day hospital stay, including dicey surgery and all anesthesia and drugs and etc. was .... a tad under $2000. And that was FULL PRICE - everybody in the hospital was shocked that my insurance wouldn't be covering any of it; their insurance would have covered 80-95% of the cost.)
Oh, and it is official (because I can swear to it) : the hospital nurses in France are MUCH prettier than the ones in the US. And they flirt with older patients, especially ones with "sexy accents" (or so I was told - apparently a slight American accent in French is somewhat sexy).
