Here are some of the highlights from the article. Should add to the discussion.

* Right off the top, the Giants subtract $14.5M in payroll this off-season (Tejada’s $6.5M, DeRosa’s $6M, Burrell’s $1M and Fontenot’s $1M–all salary info is from the Cot’s Baseball Contracts website).

The Giants could also let Cody Ross walk, which would free up another $6.3M, for a total of $20.8M gone.

* But the SFGs, at minimum, know they have $10M in raises already built into the 2012 contracts for Matt Cain (bumped up from $7M this year to $15M in 2012) and Brian Wilson (from $6.5M to $8.5M).

Plus there’s Tim Lincecum, whose two-year $21M deal expires after this season....

* Then the Giants have to figure out who’s playing shortstop in 2012–if it’s Brandon Crawford, that saves them a load of money.

* And if they’re dropping Burrell, Ross & DeRosa, and already have dropped Tejada and Aaron Rowand (who is still owed $12M for next season), the Giants will have to replace them.

* Arbitration-eligibles:

Pablo Sandoval is eligible for arbitration for the first time, and...Jonathan Sanchez.

Most of the bullpen falls in this category.

...the Giants could basically just let the normal flow of an off-season go, without major additions or surprising subtractions, and still end up on the hook with a payroll edging above $115M next season....

That leaves almost no room for adding a $20M-a-year player, and that’s almost surely what it’d take (at MINIMUM) to be in the market for Fielder or Pujols.
