Craw avoids Arb. Signs for 1/3.175. He was projected at 2.5, so the Giants "overpaid" by almost 700K

Even though nothing has changed and it is just rumors. I feel like we are not really in the running for Moncada. Going to finish third for him.

Of everything that's gone on in the offseason, that would leave me the most disappointed. Signing Moncada has been a "MUST" for me, though it's probably unrealistic.

I agree that we aint getting Moncada.

And I am A-O-K with that. Signing international FAs is a risk, even if the player is in his prime and has "proven" that he is a stud. Moncada is still just a prospect. Paying him 40M (80M after penalty) is INSANE. Even if he ends up being all he is hyped as, you gain NOTHING. You are paying him to be the second coming.

AND THEN YOU LOSE HIM TO TRUE FREE AGENCY!!

No thanks. Best case scenario, you break even equity-wise. Worst case scenario, you can't participate in the international amateur market for the next few years and you are out 80M.

Next?

Belt avoids arbitration by signing a 3.6M deal.

And the Giants officially avoid arbitration AGAIN. I don't think the Giants have ever gone to arb, have they?

As bad as he was for most of the time, he was a pro's pro and also was legendary late in 2012. I hope he lands somewhere.

Contract aside, he was a good Giant. He took his shit-medicine when needed, and he took it like a man. Then he became a hero in '12. Enough so, that there is no way we win that trophy without him.

I couldn't really care less if he catches on with anyone else, because I don't see him being a factor anymore. But if he loves the game enough to hold the type of position that he would be able to earn at this point in his career, than more power to him.

OK, I'm gonna go out on a limb here, to generate some discussion if nothing else.

I like Belt as our 1B. I think we should lock him in now before he (quite likely) explodes. I'm thinking 5/40 for the years after 2015. If it's 3.6 this year, then something like:

2016 - 5.0
2017 - 6.5
2018 - 8.0
2019 - 9.5
2020 - 11.0

If he stays healthy, and stops being a freak-accident magnet, he could reasonably become an ,800+ OPS hitter, with 20-25 HRs and 90 RBI. He had a .915 OPS after the 2013 ASB, and showed he can hit playoff pitching well.

Lock him up , Sabes.

The problem with this strategy is that it locks up 1B with a potentially average player. I would rather have a below-average player, I think, than an average player. The below average player is easier to walk away from.

But, if he does stay healthy, and gets the momentum to become the #3/#6 hitter many of us believe he can be, that would be a great move.

Would he sign it?
