Next year's class looks deeper right now but there's no guarantee that it will be once draft season rolls around. And I also don't think the Steelers would be bad enough with Trubisky to get high enough to draft a top QB next year. If that was the goal, starting the reindeer would have been the play. And even then I'm not sure the defense would allow a 5 win or so season.

I'll take the unpopular side of not being a fan of QB at #20 nor do I view Pickett as an answer at QB. I would have preferred trading down if a position of need was not deemed worthy of that pick. Pickett had one great year in college and will be 24 when the season starts.

I expected the season to play out one of two ways. Trubisky plays well and they are a borderline playoff team or he doesn't and they have a much higher pick in a likely much deeper draft for QB's in 2023. Can he really be worse that Ben was last year? I believe overall this team is much deeper and improved in every area with the exception of losing Haden and maybe WR although Washington was rarely used, Shuster was hurt, and McCloud is easily replaced.

Now every interception will have the fans clamoring for Pickett. I expect Trubisky and Pickett to have similar careers so in my opinion we just spent a 1st round pick on what we already had.

Rudolph was also a wasted pick and I said so at the time. Many disagreed at the time but some fans have selective memories but hey he had a 1st round grade so its all good.
Not trying to be contradictive... just adding fuel to the discussion...

Pickett... 1 great year? Same was said about TJ Watt & that turned out pretty good, eh? The age factor is being blown out of proportion. Considering the average shelf life of a QB, if he busts/flames out then his age won't matter. If he pans out, then we could still get north of 12 years with him, which is quadruple the average career length of an NFL quarterback. If its the "decline" you fear... Then why not think of it as a potential trade scenario down the road. Get 8-10 good years out of him, maybe a couple Lombardis, and then trade him.

Trubisky... See my posts above. Point is, this team doesn't have a great chance of getting to the super bowl with him. I'd bet the farm that AT WORST they finish 7-8 wins with Trubisky... Putting them around picks 14-15 next year.

2023 QB class... Is it really that deep though? Right now they still have Spencer Rattler in the top 4-5 at the position.. Which should be alarming to you that the depth isn't quite as good as you think. QBs like Young & Stroud will go top 5 if they continue on their current trajectory. Meaning a fat chance the Steelers ever get a chance at sniffing them in the draft. QB needy teams won't pass on him. That leaves Levis, Van Dyke etc as possibles. You can't tell me that either of those guys presents a better chance than Pickett does.

Stroud & Young are being looked at as the cream of the crop... Then there's Rattler, Levis, Van Dyke, and... Jurkovec?

Pickett would still have been top 3 QB next year. Anyone that doesn't believe that can debate a wall.

but are you really implying that they could win a Lombardi with him?

Do you really believe he can lead this team to a win over the likes of Mahomes, Burrow, Herbert, etc?
Where did I say any of this? All I implied was I believe our offense would be just fine with Trubisky to the point where we didn't need to draft a QB in the 1st. I'm not missing anything, I just disagree with you and that thought process.

Eh. Just realize that no team in the NFL prioritizes OL over the QB position. Nobody agrees with you.
And that's fine that nobody agrees with me. I'm well aware it's an unpopular opinion.

@Yo Tee Aren't you the guy who was talking about what a great pick Rudolph was? So your arguments consist of Rudolph being a great pick and Pickett a bad one.

I just want to be clear brother. If someone is going to challenge me for the worst evaluator ever I need to see it coming.
Hey, can't get them all right, eh? lol

So youre ok with them winning 8-9 wins per season & praying for someone to fall in their laps?

No I'm not okay with it but that's the hand we've been dealt with Ben retiring and our front office not securing a viable backup.

Signing Trubisky as a bridge QB who may surprise some and actually be successful is a great idea, in my opinion.
Signing him just to backup a rookie QB is stupid, in my opinion.

Drafting a rookie QB in the 1st round to make him sit behind a veteran QB who not only have winning football experience, but PLAYOFF football experience, is a great idea, in my opinion.
Drafting a rookie QB in the 1st round to immediately start him is not the best option for us, in my opinion.

I had kinda figured already that we wouldn't be contending for much this year no matter who our starting QB was. We might back our way into a playoff spot but it not like we are making the Super Bowl this year. It doesn't matter who are QB is if our O-line doesn't give him enough time to throw the ball or make a play.

You really hate what they've done with the OL.. I'm okay with what they've done and waiting to see how it works out. I think there's some potential there for a solid line.

A couple of IFs jumping off the page with that group, but a lot less than they had this time last year. Certainly more optimistic about them this year.

1. Dotson... Is he or isn't he? No question the run-game looked improved with him on the field. They need a big leap from him.

2. Center... Mason Cole, JCH or Green... Not sure what to expect here but they need the anchor to perform well.

3. Depth... Mainly concerned about OT depth. Joe Haeg & Chaz Green? Yikes.

I'm less concerned about the OTs than I was last year too. Moore Jr looked good and should continue to develop. Chuks has his limitations too, but being at RT is less of a concern. I hated the idea of him at LT last offseason. And I never understood the love for Banner. Funny dude & good teammate, but thinking he was a capable starter was baseless.

Yeah I don't know what to expect with C. I've heard good things about Cole though. Like Moore a lot at one T spot. Definitely room to grow on this line (or implode).

IIRC Cole transitioned to C last season out of necessity... I think I read that he struggled & is a better fit at Guard. Might be remembering that wrong though.

I want to root for him, but I keep questioning whether or not he actually looked good last year. Because in comparison to how Green played, I think even I could look good in there.

Expectations were pretty low after Pouncey left... But damn. We could have set the bar on the ground & Green still ended up bringing a shovel.

Such strange situation to be concerned about C the last couple seasons. I’m 52 and have never known anything but our C being the best in football; almost as if it was our right.
