$7-8m IS backup QB money. We had a bigger need on the O-Line, in my opinion. We could've gotten Ridder in the 2nd, he was the best QB in most combine events and also would've allowed us to grab some improvement for the protection of our QB. Not to mention, we are paying Trubisky almost $7 million this year and $8 million next year. In my opinion, we shouldn't be paying that much for a backup QB.
In 2002 was Kordell's last full year as the starter. Maddox went 7-3 in 2002 and then 6-10 the year before. We were looking for a QB in the 2004 draft, there is no arguing that. We should not have been looking at QB in the 1st this year, in my opinion.
2004… Yes they wanted QB, but did you know Ben was tabbed 3rd string heading into the season? If it weren’t for a late preseason injury to Charlie Batch, we may have never seen Ben in his rookie season.
So if a team drafted Ben to be a 3rd stringer & to sit back & develop… then was QB really that high of a need? He was never given the chance to take Maddox or Batch’s positions on the depth chart.
Pickett was drafted to compete for the starting position. That should tell you all you need to know about what they think of their need at QB this year.
