He could take a 1 year mle and then get like 10m per year after nxt year

But the lakers want max cap space they can’t keep him beyond next year anyway
They could keep him beyond next year; a new 1 year deal would work towards early Bird rights for the following season.

Possible.

But if he takes a 1 year, taking it in a place like Detroit where he will have a bigger role and make more money is the way to do it.

But going to a place like Detroit is basically announcing that it's all about compensation. They are many years away from contending.

And for young role players like Monk that is what is usually about.

And it should be.

Yeah he’s earned 17m over his career and should be able to get close to 50% of that in just one year though fa

No it isn’t.

Embiid is a definite top 3 and the possible winner in a season where the top 3 are closer than ever.

What you are putting out here is another level of homerism.
Are you shocked?

Lakers can give him $6.4M next year, then a contract starting at $11M+ the following year.

Staying LA would also be a way to get that money, just not next year.

But that is too much risk for a player like Monk.

He hasn’t played well enough over his career to assume his value would still be as high next summer.

Would you say this has been his best year? Why change those circumstances?

Are you just running it back with all the same players?

I certainly hope not for your sake.

And if you don’t, the circumstance changes in LA too.

These guys just don’t get it. Like players are these magnanimous altruists who live for the greater glory of the Los Angeles Lakers?!?!?! He already bet on himself and he won. It’s like you won a 3-1 bet on the roulette wheel and you decide not to take the chips you won off the table. This is his best chance to go get that guaranteed money. He’s going to take the best money regardless of where he goes.

Yeah....because he is just 24.

If he repeated this season? The cash would still be there. And who says he wants 10-12 mill to be on a team that wins 18-22 games?

Did I miss something that made it so signing with the Lakers is the choice if you want to play for a winning team?

If monk wants to take a discount to win he has better choices.

Young guys who are role players are not leaving money on the table. Money is more important than winning when you are in your early to mid 20s. Winning becomes a priority as you approach 30

And if they are going big game hunting, if memory serves, they could sign whoever they were targeting then go over the salary to sign him to a bigger deal. He'd be putting a lot of trust in the organization if he did that though.

If the Lakers can convince Monk to stay, awesome. But I'm not holding my breath.

Dennis Schroeder should serve as a cautionary tale for a player like Monk that when someone offers you a significant raise...you take it. As much as I would love for him to stay, he'd be crazy to stay for the $6-8 million he can get from the Lakers if someone offers him $15 million.
