I wonder sometimes about the "new" front office. Seems like the ghosts of Hextall and WTFC are still present and screwing things-up as usual.

Pelletier was on waivers. Why didn't we claim him then? Seems dumb to trade for him later.

Waivers up to opening night are a little trickier. Lots of proven AHL-ers that haven't carved out an NHL role on waivers then. I think Brink and Cates were examples of that last year.

The real bright side in this trade to me is, at least management saw this wasn't working and took the initiative to start fixing it, like Sparhawk said, we have quite a few assests and if used correctly could put us on a way better track, we also have a few potential diamonds in our younger talent, hopefully a couple of those guys pan out. Don't forget, we are probably going to get a good haul for Risto and Laughton, just hope their not afraid to pull the trigger.
Have to dump folks who aren’t getting anywhere near their ceiling. Closer to their floor

Hextall. - At least we’re starting to recover from his devastation. Just look at the Pens.

Bit of a broken record, but it all comes down to the draft. I liked Hextall's plan but he drafted terribly, or their development sucked. I'm not in love with Briere's plan, but if he drafts/develops well this could all work.

I guess the next question is, will Torts be here after this season? This team isn't any better since he's taken the helm, IMO.

Obviously not a Torts guy, but I don't see any reason to get rid of him at this point. Still a patchwork roster, still punching above their weight IMO. Turned Risto from an albatross to something they should actually get some value back for.

Worth keeping an eye on his relationship with Michkov. Benched again last night. If that starts to deteriorate you'll have a decision to make.

I think he get's the year and they need to move him into the front office in some role. He has played his part and a team player, and the typical flyer way would be to give him some role in an advisory position. I just don't think we have seen him develop anyone of the prospects to the point where you can justify him staying on with a team that is very entrenched in rebuild. Risto he has done well with, but i don't think thats enough. Especially when we all know the right move is to move on from him at the deadline.

I don't know if I have ever seen a team so committed to a rebuild put a guy that doesn't really have patience for mistakes in the coaching role. Michkov has said all the right things but you'd got to think this nonsense of benching with limited minutes can't be sitting well with him.

Its not so much that as to actually ridding ourselves of the last of their mistakes, both of them made some big mistakes were still paying for. Hopefully we get better as we clean up the remaining rooster. Like it's been said, lots of pieces we have to get better, just have to be used more wisely going forward.

We haven't been committed to a rebuild, its been an almost rebuild but not really. I do like your idea that now with this trade we might be headed in the direction of actually doing a real rebuild that Torts can go upstairs somewhere next season.

What a shame they're wasting all of Konecny's years.

That's a dude that deserves the playoffs.

Farabee wasn't living up to his $5,000,000 cap hit, so they cleared 3 years of that. A few years ago it looked like Frost was taping into his potential but he seems to leveled out. At times he looked like a real player and then disappear. With York and Foerster RFA's next year, that extra $5,000,000 will help.

NHL just announced biggg cap increases the next few years.

95M next year
104M the year after
113.5M the year after that

Flyers going to be swimming in cap space in pretty short order.

Briere’s plan comes into focus with that.

Summer of 2026, welcome to the Flyers 30 yr old Connor McDavid!

Idk what happened to this team in the last two games. I've been sick, sleeping a lot and didn't watch them. Seems like the 4-2 win over NJ was our last gasp and now it's pretty much over.

I hate to say it, but there is really nothing left to play for this season. There are too many teams between us and a playoff spot, plus the schedule is just too difficult from here on out.

As for this trade with Calgary, we dumped some salary and two prospects that we clearly have given up on. Farabee's $5 million comes off the books for the next 3 seasons and Frost (at $2.1 million now) probably wanted a nice raise in his next deal, despite being a RFA.

Another 2nd round pick in the next draft is acquired. Despite shedding the salary, that was probably the piece we were after. Kuzmenko is likely just a throw-in to keep the money close. He will just walk after this season. Idk much about Pelletier, but he's a younger winger (23) that I'm assuming will be much cheaper coming off his entry level deal. He will be an inexpensive RFA this summer.

Also, for me, this trade pretty much signals the end of playing to win games this season.

I had originally stated that we needed to win 2 of the last 3 games to stay in contention. Well, it started out nicely and ended with two pathetic losses. Not good enough. The Islanders are absolutely rolling and NJ desperately wanted revenge. Tough games, but to get shut out back to back is embarrassing.
