Yeah, his obp is nuts and should be recognized as exceptional...It places him in the top 50 of MLB...Well it doesn't...but it does put him in sacred company with household names like Jesus Aguilar and Kyle Seager. That's something.

actually, it isn't. it's a great stat that, like everything else, has a very few small exceptions, which are players that walk a lot. there aren't many of those.

BA doesn't tell you the effectiveness of a batter in scoring or driving in runs. It also doesn't tell you the effectiveness of a batter in getting on base. Other than that - it tells you a lot.

Don't worry...I've got a 60+ game season of experience now to confirm the Grandal is whatever...He isn't horrible...but he isn't top notch either. There's so many other players on our team alone that I would not dare give up before Grandal...Multiply that by the other 29...

i didn't suggest it's the only stat that matters. but if the game is on the line, a runner at second with two outs and down by one run, who do you want up? a guy who hits .230 and walks a lot, or a guy that hits .330?

I'll take the guy who hits in the clutch no matter what his BA happens to be, but in general - yes - a higher batting average tells you something. It is the first stat I look for in a player.

Latest FA updates: Yanks are closing in on Kluber, a deal should be done by the end of the evening. The Mets are trying likewise to get Hand into the fold, altho no deal is imminent at this point.
