first, the damn off season isn't over!
second, both darvish and snell are over-rated imo. so far, i am not displeased with anything hahn has or hasn't done.
The offseason isn't over???????????????? Shit, no one told me!!!

I don't think either Darvish or Snell are overrated and I suspect neither does the vast majority of analysts and fans as well - but this is just a guess on my part. I do believe that it would have been too much to land Snell, but based on what the Cubs received for Darvish and Caratini, the Sox could have easily matched that in terms of player/prospect costs.

yu 15-14 last 3 seasons.
he started well and his 1st 3 seasons were terrific. since then ... fair!

snell 10-10 last 2 seasons and 21-25 in 4 out of his 5 major league seasons.
i don't see two years of being a .500 pitcher following his great season as very promising.

the pads are making a huge $100M gamble on these two.

i call these guys both over-rated. baseball is replete with one hit wonders: just pitchers ... fidrych, dave fleming, justin thompson, shawn estes, hideki irabu, dontrell willis and on & on & on.

I tend to go with the "what have you done for me lately" approach when it comes to evaluating veterans. For Darvish, he's been borderline outstanding since the AS break of '19. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but my guess is his work would be ranked in the top 3 in all of baseball during this timeframe. It tells me whatever he needed to find in his old dominating self has been accomplished. Yes of course he could fall flat on his face this year, but the trend says otherwise. The Pads got him for a veteran pitcher who had a pretty decent '20 season, along with 4 prospects, none of whom were in their top 10. Just about every analyst and sportswriter believes they won this trade big time - at least on paper and definitely in the short term.

Snell has been a bit more up-n-down in his past three campaigns. A very good overall performance this past season, preceded by a mediocre '19, which in turn was preceded by a Cy Young '18. I think he too is trending upward, but his potential performance doesn't mean as much to me being I would not have traded any of our untouchables to land him, which might have been the issue if indeed Hahn was in trade talks for his services.

You can argue all day that the Padres are making a huge gamble and you wouldn't necessarily be wrong. But then again, isn't taking on just about any pitcher a gamble of sorts, especially in this day and age? The Padres happen to play in not just the same league, but the same division as the world champs and current #1 overall rated ballclub, the Los Angeles Dodgers. They have a much higher and immediate hill to climb than do the White Sox. I'm guessing they feel that based on the existing talent already on their roster, they're positioned to be in a 'win-now' mode and have taken the necessary steps to catch up to and possibly move past the Dodgers (and Braves for that matter).

The only point about Darvish - is he is 34 and and 3 expensive years left on his contract. That's probably why he got trade for 3 teenagers and a starter whose fast ball is slower than most changeups.

Snell is probably worth the price of his contract for three years of control.

Actually, they were showing game clips of him this past season when discussing the trade and several of his FBs clocked at 97. Not saying that's his average FB speed, I'm sure they were showing his best. But he still has some stuff left in the tank. And yeah, three more guaranteed years for a pitcher entering his age 35 season is a bit scary, gotta admit that much.

Slow down LSD - my reference was to the acquired Zach Davies - an 80's sinkerball pitcher and the 3 teenagers the Cubs got in return for Darvish - not much.

I used to fine my kids 25 cents every time they said "sorry" over my preferred - "it won't happen again." But you get special dispensation - sorry accepted. ;)

I feel ya. Sorry often comes across as "yeah, whatever". But in my case, I was truly and sincerely sorry (yeah, whatever).

At first glance, it looks like the Sox are close to signing Hendriks as the new closer (warning, it's a loooooong article):

But as you delve a bit deeper into the story, it seems more wishful thinking than pending action. I know the Sox have been linked to Hendriks for a while now, but so far all it's been is a whiff of smoke, no fire whatsoever. There's also an article on the NBCSports site that the Sox are keeping in contact with Colome, whatever that's worth. But on MLB's site, it's being reported that a number of teams are interested in Colome's services, including our arch enemy Twins. Wouldn't that be a pisser if they inked him.

I fell for the same gambit @Lake Shore Drive
Hahaha, proves you're smarter than me - you didn't waste your time posting it!! Actually, it's not a bad read as an all around article goes. But SS Sox could have been a bit more forthcoming in the way they titled the story.

i don't understand the subtitle: "...may shift from the Southern Hemisphere to the South Side, to join the White Sox".
would they consider the south side sox as the southern hemishere and to he'd be shifting TO it ... not FROM it?

these little things bug me.

NO, I'm the dumbest Mofo on this board, and insisting on this distinction proves it.

Then there's this from FanSided via Rotoworld:

  • Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Dodgers have "strong interest" in free agent closer Liam Hendriks.

Hendriks was spotted at the Blue Jays' facility in Dunedin, Florida on Monday, but it appears that they have some competition. The Dodgers are trying to settle their third base situation, with free agent Justin Turner still in the mix, but adding quality depth to their bullpen is a priority as well. Hendriks would certainly qualify and could have some ramifications for Kenley Jansen's future in the closer role. Stay tuned, as it seems Hendriks' market is beginning to heat up.
