are we talking about the same guy? including him in a trade with a couple upper-level prospects might bring us something good but by himself we'd be lucky to get a half bag of batting practice balls
He definitely has trade value. Just because we all do not want him starting here instead of others doesn't mean he has no trade value.

Only if the Rangers could play the White Sox every game.

the question is is his trade value enough to block some of the young players deserving time with the major league team? it's not like a few years ago when you could bring up a bunch of them in September and give them playing time now you're only allowed to bring up 1 position player and 1 pitcher so if you want to bring up others you've got to clear spots by moving those who aren't going to be with the team next year or won't have a spot because someone more talented needs it.

Taveras can sit on the bench. None of our prospects need to come up and sit on the bench. I don't mind him blocking someone from riding the bench.

From Evan Grant:

Since the All-Star break, the Rangers are:
7-0 vs. White Sox
10-21 vs. Everybody else

so by that way of thinking we should pull Grossman & Jankowski off waivers and not bring anyone up

That is an odd conclusion to draw. It doesn't mean that at all.

It also is not what the Rangers had in mind as they did put those two on.waivers and did not put Taveras on waivers.

Actually, I fully expect Leody to start at least half the games in September, because, well because, they are the Rangers.

I went back to look at all of the great robbery catches that folks have been talking about last night and today. I think the Eli White catch and the GMJ catch were about the same level of greatness. I believe they both barely edge out Jankowski's catch. They are all great though.

What took so long to finally cut Grossman loose. Of course why did we pick him up?

That line score looks like he was pitching under stress throughout. A lot of baserunners in 5 innings.
I went back to check. He got everyone out un the first inning. He gave up a single with 2 outs in the 2nd. He gave up a walk in the 3rd and a single and a walk in the 4th. He retired the side in order in the 5th. He started the sixth and faced 3 hitters without recording an out. It went homer, walk, single.

The 6th inning ruined what had been a pretty nice looking line. Thankfully, the guy who relieved him didn't allow either of his inherited baserunnrrs to score.

not talking about them sitting on the bench but we have to clear the deadweight from the 40-man soon anyway so why not now? Taveras is a deadweight he is never going to be a good starter and him sitting on the bench is just what we don't need occupying a spot on the bench, we need to bring up Crim, Foscue, Harris & for a few weeks someone like Fabian who can play all 3 OF positions and seems to do the one thing Grossman, Jankowski and Taveras can't: hit. at the end of the season we can DFA Fabian if there's a better choice at AAA or AA or FA.

There just isn't enough playing games time to do that. It will be hard getting Foscue and Harris enough playing time. Crim would get very little. A fourth guy would get next to nothing without a rash of injuries, and if that happened the DL would be utilized.

If they don't plan on Taveras being a part of the team next year, and that is a huge "if", then they want to get something back for him. Him being on the roster will not prevent a single prospect from receiving playing time, if the Rangers do not want him to play.

They did not DFA him, so it is obvious they want to keep him until the end of the season, at least. I am just stating one obvious reason why they could be doing that. The other reason would be that they intend on him being on the 2025 roster. I hope it is the former.

We will get something for him in trade should we decide to trade him in 3 months. After all, we got something for Elvis and the White Sox got something for Grossman. Taveras has more to offer a team than either of those two did at the time.
