Good morning. Brainstorming and Wondering if IKF is an option for getting much playing time at SS this season. This opens up 3B at least temporarily Of course at some point I would rather have Tejeda
Since you are brainstorming, SS may get crowded. Elvis Tejeda and IKF is a load. What do you think will happen with Elvis? Will he get traded?
You are right. It opens up 3rd but likely Tejeda will not play as much as we would like.
Good problem to have I suppose.

No good catching prospect sits 60 games a year. That is unthinkable. If you have an offensive strong catcher like Huff you find ways to get him into the game a lot more than 100 times a year.

Of course, he wouldn't play catcher 140 games, but between 1B and DH he should play close to 140 games. If he was mainly a defensive catcher then he would play less like Sundberg did. Even Pudge almost played 140 games his first year and his offense wasn't that great then.
I'm thinking you were implying that Huff would be playing all games at MLB level and catcher. That is OK but does have consequences. If he plays a lot at first then we have to consider Guzman if he is part of the picture and he had shown improvement at the end of season. DH is fine but Willie may get less time. Just a lot of pcs moving around before we even look at Trevino. Yes I agree we do not want any of these guys sitting on the bench interfering with their development but at some point more specifics need to be worked out and not sure if JD and co. can do that effectively.

Santana is currently damaged goods. He will be nontendered. Maybe an MILB/MLB conversion contract until healthy
Maybe but I think he ie re-signed and ends up on the 25 at some point. That still means they either play Taveras in CF and Solak in LF with Calhoun at DH or we waste millions bringing in some 3rd or 4th level FA and one of them gets benched or relegated to the minors.

Depends if Jung plays at the MLB level for sure or not. IKF is a really good at 3B. If he was to lose out at 3B I actually would rather see him at 2B over Odor or Solak but don't see that happening. They are going to have a logjam in the IF.

I am fine with Santana moving on.

My thought is Tejeda gets a little more seasoning at MILB level so IKF or Elvis starts at SS. At midseason let Tejeda come up and take over spot unless everything is going great. Next season is a likely a wash and no money will be spent unless we have Fans in the seats and somehow get a great start. But the latter is so unlikely since we really don’t have elite talent

My thinking is IKF is our next SS. Elvis is a problem we all love but the time comes when he will need to move on. Oder is just Oder. We all know about that problem so not much to speculate about. If Jung is all we have heard about, the future looks bright.
Catcher is especially bright if handled correctly. Can Guzman develop into a decent hitter and can Gallo get back to where he was once. Not a bad outlook. Shall see.

Correction: Tejeda to be our next SS. That may create a need for some trading with Jung IKF or Elvis. Seems if Tejeda is our SS, then who plays 3rd. Jung or IKF. Maybe @the Nightcrawler will take Oder home with him LOL and solve a big problem.

Thoughts on SS/3rd?

Being an old school baseball player I have always thought you cannot over rely on analytics as you do need to use your eye and gut on what is going on around you. Otherwise you are just a robot. Interesting article.

Yes that was a blowaway to me. Huge surprise he was pulled low on the pitch count and had handleD Betts so easily all night long
I was not rooting for the Dodgers so much but wanted Kershaw to get some redemption due to past WS fiasco with the Astros. He relies on deception and if they know what’s coming he will get hit hard

So spend (waste) millions on “veterans” that hold back the advancement of the kids. But oh yeah in your scenario we trade them away for garbage at the trade deadline.
I was saying that is what you can assume they are going to do since they almost always do it that way. It has nothing to do with being what I want them to do.

I mentioned a few days ago, that if they didn't keep Santana, that I would like for them to sign a good enough OF on a one year deal so we can trade him in July. I never mentioned trading away the whole bench full of veterans. I also said getting the one guy to flip would be my Plan B after my Plan A of keeping Santana..

You take differences from how you want things to work out too personally. Life is too short to get so bent out of shape with these discussions.

When you are starting from scratch at most positions and wanting the best scenario for the team you play the best you’ve got. You don’t waste money and playing time on scrubs and mediocrity you utilize the best.
I give up. You just can't stand the though of an idea that conflicts with yours even when your idea is in conflict with the history of how things have always been done, and have always been done that way for a good reason.

Maybe you will get your wish and Jung and Huff will sit on the bench for 60 games next year so we can try to ruin two more prospects.

So unless we figure some way to trade Lynn, Odor, Gibson and Lyles, who gets benched or sent to the minors. Lynn, Gibson & Lyles eat up 3 starter spots and Allard makes 4 so 1 position and 3 or 4 young guys who should be given their chance end up back in the minors. Odor blocks Solak at 2B and if we bring back Santana he blocks Solak, Calhoun and Taveras. And you talk about adding 3 cheap veterans who will eat up playing time for other young players.
Never mind.

Eventually, I think both of those guys are bench players on a WS team. We are a long ways away from that now though.

I think they give Elvis another year at SS.

I think our future at SS is still a couple of years away from the big leagues. Maybe it will be Maximo Acosta. When it all said and done, I wouldn't be surprised if neither Elvis, Odor, IKF or Tejeda fits into our long range plans as IF starters. Jung, Apostle, Foscue, Acosta, Acuna, Basabe, Wendzel, and possibly our next top draft pick probably will pass those those other guys.
