You should be happy. With where USC was drastic measures were needed and that’s what they did. Even Riley admits now it didn’t go down right but the gloves are off, it’s a pro sport now. I’m afraid Venables might be too good of a person for this world, you don’t have that problem lol. Grinch is not the answer for you though, you will see that. His defense is based on turnovers, which they got in spades this year. They are very cyclical though. You should be able to buy the athletes now to build a real defense. I don’t mean that in a bad way either, it’s just how things are now.

Yeah, I actually like Grinch's schemes. Turnover based defenses tend to be turnover based because they play aggressive defense. I love aggressive defense. That's how USC's best defenses played in the Pete Carroll era.

However, to play that style you have be fundamentally sound and disciplined so that you can get stops without turnovers. They're going to give up some big plays, all aggressive defenses do. The key is how many and what happens between the big plays.

I want to see what happens when Grinch has a defense with some size and depth to go along with the speed and scheme. If it looks more like the better Pete Carroll defenses, we'll be in great shape...if not, it won't be long before folks will be calling for his head.

I agree re: "buying players". It doesn't mean what it used to mean.

If Venables fails at OU, it won't be because "he's too good of a person for this world". It will be because he either isn't the coach you all think he is, or because he's stupid. If he's not using what are perfectly legal and acceptable resources like NIL and the portal because of some antiquated ideals that don't exist anymore and never really did, then he's stupid. If he does use those tools and fails...he's not the coach you think he is.

Either way, you'll be replacing him.

And why do you think that the defense and results will be the same at USC as at Oklahoma?

You've already said that USC should be able to get better players than OU could. If you have better players in the same scheme, you're likely going to get better results.

People who have depth of knowledge of college football history will find it funny for an OU fan to lament “buying talent”. It’s just all out in the open now. After WW2, the Oklahoma boosters bought themselves into relevancy. All 3 OU coaches who have won national titles have also had punishments levied for pay for play schemes during their tenure.

One would think but Muleshoe hasn’t shown he cares about defense, or special teams for that matter. Next few years will be fun, glad we are finally getting a real playoff.

Yeah, it is kind of odd seeing a program that had Barry Switzer for 22 years trying to act all virtuous. lol

The rules have changed and now paying athletes has a pathway for people to do it legally. Everybody is on an equal level and programs can maximize the product they’ve built.

Or OU has shown they have a ceiling on the talent they can get that isn't as high as USC's.

Which you explain you already preparing your excuses in case Venables failed.

Not acting that way at all, just stating facts based on how things are now. I said buying players wasnt meant in a bad way. One more thing in regards to Venables as a coach. We flat out know that he was the best defensive guy in the country, not debateable just like Riley was the best offensive guy. Neither has proven much as a head coach yet.

I wouldn't say everyone is on an equal level. But NIL and the portal does have the potential to give some programs access to players that they may not have access to otherwise. Theoretically, that should help the smaller/lesser known programs improve and maybe be a little more competitive.

No excuses, I don’t make ‘em. Venables will be expected to achieve at blueblood level because that’s damn sure where he is at.

None of this has anything to do with what I posted.
