Scouting reports I've read tended to think he was a powerful skater with a good stride and good agility. Not blazing fast but a pretty good skater. I think he'll be a pretty good player.

Ceiling: Jamie Benn
Floor: Jordan Staal-lite
To be fair, I read similar things about Strome (the knock on his skating was speed + his first steps). And I think Strome will still be a pretty good player as well.

Matt Tkachuk is 7 points off what Marner put up last season while playing with the man himself. You wouldn't take that over a big centre who might have skating issues?

I don't think that I said that I would definitely take Dubois at 4 or 5.

But you know what I really worry about with Tkachuk?

Lots of secondary assists in that high point total.

I know, but I asked anyway because you said you'd consider it at 4 or 5.

You could've argued that about Marner Iggy Popping last year off of Max Domi (or are we still saying Domi is overrated?). Tkachuk also had 11 points at the WJC, same as Matthews.

Besides, that's always been such a weird argument to me - "He can play well with really good players". Uh, good? Even better if the guy he's piggy-backing on is already drafted to the team drafting him lol.

If Marner had as many secondary assists as Tkachuk had this year I would have. But he didn't, all of the evidence showed that he was the one driving the play. Tkachuk's boxcars this year are also very PP influenced, which is another thing that scares me.

edit: if you want to see the gap between Marner/Dvorak and Tkachuk,

I'm also not sure that his success playing on a line with the undisputed #1 player in the draft says much here to refute the argument.

There is a difference between "He can play well with really good players" and "He can register points playing with really good players" though. The latter point is what we have clear evidence for, but it's the former that is more important for team building.

I'm not using it to refute the argument, I'm saying I never understood the argument. Why wouldn't you want a player who perfectly complements your best player? It's literally saying "I don't want that guy, he's only good when he's playing with our guy!"

Anyway, everybody above Tkachuk in primary points has already been drafted save DeBrincat. It isn't something that puts me off all that much.

Anyway, regardless I'm fine with whoever they draft. The people drafting will have done their homework far better than you or I.

All things equal, the player I fear most about drafting is Matthews. I'd almost prefer going 2nd and grabbing Laine.

Not really related to the current conversation, but I saw a little of game 7 between Barrie and Mississauga and both Mangiapane and Andersson (especially Rasmus) looked pretty good out there.

I'm not sure that I would agree that Tkachuk "perfectly complements" Marner.

I'm not saying that I don't like Tkachuk and don't think he'll have a good career. I'm just not sure that there's enough upside to take him at #4.

Just saw these tweets about DuBois (apparently Crosby is not included here because of inadequacies in the QMJHL game sheets back when he was a teenager).

I haven't really looked into this years draft yet. I'm looking forward to the postseason. I know a bit about the top guys, but that's about it.

As long as Edmonton, Toronto & New Jersey don't win the lottery I'll be happy with it. I'd like to see Arizona win it or at least end up in the top 3.

And as long as the Isles get taken care of quickly by Florida, I'll be happy with it.

I get that. If the Jackets got Mathews, and Kukan and Werenski make the team next year, there's absolutely no excuse for the Jackets to miss again. Except the coach going nuclear, and I certainly do not want that to happen.

The league could definitely use another Pavel Brendl.

The league could have used the first one.

There are a couple of guys above him on the list that were somewhat shitty NHL players, sure. But there are a lot more guys below him on the list who were very good and even excellent NHL players.

I had some doubts about Strome but I think he'll end up a pretty good player too. He showed well at the WJHC.
