"You're taught when a quarterback slides, you want to aim for the head because when he [does] slide, your trajectory is going to be going over where his head was at the initial play," said Ravens' C.J. Mosley. (Kevin Richardson / Baltimore Sun video)"

Not sure what your point is, but when he made contact with Flacco's head it was roughly 2 feet off the ground. So if his initial trajectory was for his head to avoid it if he slid, maybe he thought this guy was running the ball ?

Flacco continuously runs his mouth trash talking and he has had his big mouth temporarily shut. It was a clean hit

I don't wish for any guys to get hurt, but this is a violent sport, and there are risks involved. The NFL is basically in a position of trying to make an unsafe activity "safer." It's a losing proposition.

Maybe if you are under a certain size/weight, you shouldn't play.

So I have seen QB's pull the old fake slide and gain an extra few yards because the defender assumed he would slide. If a QB does that, should that be a foul?

I believe that it is ... or at least the ball is placed wherever it was when he faked or began his slide.

defensive players running full speed should be able to stop on a dime right when the QB decides that he is going to slide

Great comeback!
It didn't require one based on the same asinine post that has been used 1000s of times. " You didn't see it the way I did therefore you didn't play sports" :L

Let's maybe stop saying Flacco actually slid. What I saw him doing was curling up into a ball

(1) Defenders are required to treat a sliding runner as they would a runner who is down by contact.

(2) A defender must pull up when a runner begins a feet-first slide. This does not mean that all contact by a defender is illegal. If a defender has already committed himself, and the contact is unavoidable, it is not a foul unless the defender makes forcible contact into the head or neck area of the runner with the helmet, shoulder, or forearm, or commits some other act that is unnecessary roughness.

(3) A runner who desires to take advantage of this protection is responsible for starting his slide before contact by a defensive player is imminent; if he does not, and waits until the last moment to begin his slide, he puts himself in jeopardy of being contacted.

Not dirty, it's football. Why not just change it to two hand touch and get it over with.

IMO he could have stayed high and went over Flacco, he knew what he was doing. I thought that was pretty obvious.

The fact that the slide was late and sloppy will probably help Alonso avoid a suspension, but I do think he should be fined at the very least.

It was a very aggressive hit.

But Flacco was being 'aggressive' too, he was trying to get his first down, and Alonzo was trying to stop that.

Flacco could have slid earlier, but he waited as long as possible before doing it, because he wanted his first down. He was being a competitor. Alonzo was being one, too. It was his job to prevent that first down. Not play patty cake.

It's one thing to give QB's a bubble in the pocket, but many of these slide hits would end if they didn't have that special protection and were instead treated exactly like a running back.

Then the QB's would think twice before running, or drop a LOT earlier.
This!

Leading with the helmet and hitting Flacco in the head deserved the ejection. But I wouldn't call it dirty. Flacco was running for a first down, Alonso's job was to prevent that. A sliding target presents a much smaller window & flying at full speed like Kiko was makes it very difficult to avoid that hit to Joe's helmet, especially since a sliding player is essentially falling. Sure there MIGHT have been ways around it for both sides, but they are competitors and this is tackle football.

Not dirty, but deserved the ejection. It happens. A fine is likely necessary to keep with the status quo.

It was certainly a penalty. I don't think he deserves a fine, but he'll probably get one just because the NFL is trying to look like it's taking a hard stance against head hits.

He does not deserve any extra punishments, like a suspension.
