If the Denver Broncos are to make the playoffs in 2020, than John Elway have no choice but to improve the dismal offense.

While of course the talent Denver may bring in via Free Agency and the Draft is exciting, typically the biggest season-to-season gains come from young players already on the roster taking a big step forward.

Listening to Vic Fangio at his Annual Combine Press Conference, perhaps the player this team is banking on most to take that leap forward is none other than 2020 First Round Pick Noah Fant.

Given what Fangio said in tandem with the stats Fant put up in 2019 and historical data for tight ends going from Year 1 in the league to Year 2, Noah Fant very well could be on the verge of a massive breakout season for Denver in 2020.

Derek Wolfe, 6-5, 285, Broncos
A very good Bronco since he was their first draft pick in the second round in 2012, when he had 6.0 sacks as a rookie to his eighth season in 2019, when he flourished in Fangio’s system to have a career-best 7.0 sacks in 12 games.

Coming off a $9 million-a-year second contract and while he’s made it clear he wants to stay in Denver, he doesn’t want to take a pay cut, either. From the Broncos’ side of the bargaining table, there may be concern Wolfe has played 16 games only once the past five seasons and he just turned 30.

Shelby Harris, 6-2, 290, Broncos
A 7th-round cast-off by the Raiders, Jets and Cowboys, Harris was the Broncos’ biggest surprise in 2017 when he had 5.5 sacks, 3 pass deflections and a game-winning blocked field goal.

Played all 48 games in his three seasons with the Broncos. Had a career-best 6.0 sacks and NFL-most 9 pass deflections in 2019.

Switched agents to Drew Rosenhaus under the presumption he will get a new contract worth $8 million to $10 million a year.

The Broncos loved Shelby at nearly $900,000 in 2018 and even $3.1 million last year. But would they love him at $8 million-plus?

It’s one of the toughest questions all NFL teams confront about two to five of their own players every year. Which is why there’s free agency when the answer is no.

Former Dolphin had 5.5 sacks in his first four seasons; 9.5 in 2019.

Javon Hargrave, 6-2, 305, Steelers
More nose tackle than 3-4 end in Pittsburgh, he had 10.5 sacks the past two seasons.

These two are interesting to me.

DJ Reader seems to be one of the guys they have really zeroed in on for the DL. Michael Pierce is another. Fangio likes his big men really big. He essentially wants the outside rushers to collapse the edge and the interior guys to push the middle making the pocket as tiny as possible making QB's nervous. Gives guys then angles to shed a block and make a play.

I have seen they liked him where I don't remember could be you guys. He fits(I bet he eats up to 10,000 calories a day during the season) what you say for sure. He is not going to sack very often but they must like his pushing the pocket all the same.

Pressure can be just as deadly as a sack. Obviously most QB's when under pressure see a huge drop off in production. Leads to quicker decisions and more turnovers. That was something that was missing last year with the Fangio defense that I expect to see more of this year. Also I would point that Mahomes' worst game of the year was the Super Bowl. The 49ers were able to get pressure on him from all parts of the DL. The only time that he had success is when the edge rushers forgot to play contain. Mahomes is one of those QB's that wants to get outside the pocket. I remember back in 2015 that was one of the best defensive performances of the year when the Broncos made Rodgers play from the pocket the entire game. They didn't sack him often and there were a lot of plays that lasted longer than they should have but they never let him get to his comfort of running around buying time.

Reader may be our DE. He doesn’t really push the pocket but when JJ went down Reader moved to DE and some inside the Texans building believe he’s a better DE than DT

Sacks tend to fluctuate massively year-to-year. Pressures are far more sustainable
