Smith can visit Miami or Seattle because he should. But if the Niners don't get Manning I don't see how there can be any doubt he doesn't come back to the Niners. Who's gonna offer him over 8 mil a year?

Welp, the little bit of leverage Smith had just got smaller. Flynn signed with the Seahawks.

I've watched every single Stanford game since Harbaugh was their coach. I've closely followed Andrew Luck since the third college game of his career against San Jose St. And I'm giving you hard stats that prove that Harbaugh wasn't conservative at Stanford.

You're just making shit up to make excuses why Alex was the one of least used starting QB in the league last year. In fact, the only QB who was asked to pass less than Alex was Tim Tebow.

stanford was more execution than pushing the ball downfield. it was never a high flying spread offense like u see at so many schools now.

If the 49ers somehow persuade Manning to join them, I'm afraid Alex Smith may find himself without a team period. The guy just has some terrible luck.

Cam Inman (twitter): Source close to Alex Smith says QB is stunned and jaded over his plight w/49ers

I'd be interested to know who this source is. If it came straight from Inman I wonder if it's (one of) Smith's parents. Inman has gone to his parents on a number of occasions for information. That doesn't mean that's who it is here, because Inman talks to a bunch of different people, but that would be my first guess.

Well now that Alex has talked over his value with the Dolphins he could come back and sign his contract with the 49ers which would put the ball in their court.

Kawakami:

Before Alex Smith is ripped to shreds by 49ers fans for not taking team's 3-year, 24M offer... we have no idea what was guaranteed in that.

If 49ers made calculated decision to downscale ASmith guarantees to set up for Kaepernick taking over quickly, that's a big difference.

+1.

I don't like Kawakami much, will rarely read more than what is quoted here, but this is exactly what some people are missing. Smith has to look out for his future on and off the field. It's not that he needs to have a bad season to be cut, he could have a better than 2011 season and get replaced/benched based on Kaep's potential without it affecting us much. If they are going to take a leap of faith in Kaep, it should be a major decision (though I don't think the leap would be as big as some say, certainly not after another year learning).

The more I think about this, the more I'm convinced there's a strong Kaepernick component to this. 49ers don't want to block his path.

I 10,000% agree. I think that's where the delays in the contract started and the Manning development was secondary.

The Dolphins are so poorly run. I feel bad for Alex even with the $8M per he'll have to dump pass to Reggie Bush all game.

Exactly, Smith should only feel stunned or jaded if the 49ers didn't reach out at all. They tried to get him back but he said no, and guarantees or no guarantees he has already made 40 million dollars for 1 winning season... and a lot of disappointment.

In my opinion, the 49ers were more than fair in their offer.
