I keep forgetting about Chris Canty. Add his name to that list as well.

Okay, I think we all need to take a deep breathe and prepare for some serious damage being done by the 49ers in this draft!

The Baalke/Harbaugh combo should be able to extract some serious value out of a tricky draft. This is a great draft to have flexibility to pick up redshirts, and the strengths of this draft are lining up nicely with our needs. And thanks to KC

Can you imagine how much depth & more we will have if we "hit" this draft??? I just echoed the sentiments of 31 GM's.

Nothing but Net Trent - Nothing but Net!

My concern is essentially "wasting" the picks. We didn't have nearly as many picks last year, I think we have more depth this year than last as well. With the lack of impact we got from our rookies last year, I'd like to move around and get to a position where we can get guys that will contribute at a high level early in their careers.

It will be next to impossible to determine what the 49ers do in the offseason this year, becauase there are so many possiblities. Do they trade some of these picks for current NFL players (Revis, Harvin, etc.)? Do they use these picks to significantly trade up for a guy they really like? Do they trade some of these picks to get more picks next year? Do they stay put and use the picks to grab depth?

So many possiblities that most teams do not have. I think the picture will get somewhat clearer when we see what they do in Free Agency and with some of the higher contracts on the team.

There is a draft strategy known as 'something like' a flood strategy which calls for flooding certain positions with picks, good picks of course, but the idea is that you try to obtain quality from picking quantity.

I think Belichick may have used it a couple times. With that approach it will seem as if we are wasting picks but it is just a strategy and with 12-14 picks it's possible we may see something like that.

Ideally I would like to pick a little more strategically and conservatively this year and push some picks to '14. I see this draft as more depth than pro-bowl. Of course, a lot hinges on what we do with our FA's.

No matter what, it will be interesting to see how Baalke spends his riches.

It sounds like a fail safe plan for a team that doesn't believe in their ability to identify and/or develop talent. I would call this strategy the "throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks" approach rather than a flood approach. It's somewhat similar to a team calling nothing but deep passes on the belief that if you throw enough, some will be successful, or a basketball team shooting nothing but three pointers with the same logic (some will go in). I can't support a strategy that supports passing up an easy lay-up in favour of a three. Or throwing deep three straight times on 1st and 5, 2nd and 5, and 3rd and 5.

I'd rather see us use these picks to move up in this year's draft or add picks in next year's draft. If there is someone we love pretty much anywhere outside the top 10, we should be able to move up and get him. I am all about quality over quantity this year.

I'd be very surprised if we ended up drafting more than 7 or 8 guys this year after everything is said and done. We'll have three comp picks that we can't trade. I figure one or two additional depth players we'll want to draft. But the remainder will be specifically targeted impact players in the first three rounds.

Last year it appeared Trent had a specific G that he wanted with the third round pick. He got cute and tried to move back a few slots to get an extra pick. He lost the guy so he traded out to eventually pick up a future 3rd rounder for this year. If we don't get a lot of value, this will be done again to avoid wasting picks. And I'd also be very surprised if we don't trade at least a pick or two for a player prior to the draft.

49ers signed WR Joe Hastings tonight (or today probably). The 49ers signed him as an UDFA out of Washburn in 2011 and then waived him in then preseason and then put him on the practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster for 1 game the week Braylon Edwards was cut and Ginn and KW were dealing with injuries. They later cut him. He's been with nobody in the NFL since that time.

Here's what I believe (and want) the Niners to do with the upcoming draft:

Trade the 34th pick for a 1st next season to some shit team starved for QB help, looking to "steal" a Barkley or Wilson at the top of the round.

Package a couple of their 3rds and 4ths to trade back into the 2nd. IIRC, they have 3 3rds and 2 4ths, enough to be able to get them back into the 2nd twice without giving up their own 2nd rounder. We need to start to target players and doing this would give us 3-4 picks in the first 64, enough to gain some impact players at positions of serious need.

I think with the rumblings around, it's pretty clear we are interested in addressing the CB position through FA. Whether it's a trade for Revis(hopefully not) or Sean Smith, Talib, or any of the other players I think we recognize the need in our secondary. I am not sure how I feel about this, while it helped getting Justin Smith, overall I think at our current state of the team I don't necessarily want to bring in a FA that is going to take away a contract from a member of our team currently(looking at you Anthony Davis, Kaepernick, Iupati, Aldon, Cashtree, and Goldson immediately). When we got Justin Smith, we didn't have the team talent that was coming up for contract soon. I think we need to just take a step back and look at our team and the players we could be losing in a year, two years, three years..

I think we will definitely move some of the picks into next years draft. In my opinion, we probably will keep our 31, 34, carolina's pick in the third(74 or something like that?.) I think that we will move up with our 2nd rounder(61, and our third rounder(93 or whatever it was) and move up to the top 45.. that would give us 4 picks in the top 75.. although we may feel the most value could be staying with three picks between 61 and 93.. Never can tell with this group, all though as we all know and easily realize now....

A contract for a new player won't take away from re-signing someone else down the road. Justin Smith and Rogers have big cap eaters that go away soon. Now if you are talking 16 per for Revis that is a different story.

yea, I was assuming Revis would get the highest defensive contract, which is on his wishlist. So yes, close to the 16m per mark, which would be prohibitive in signing our current players.

A league source tells the Baltimore Sun that the Ravens have interest in free agent DL Ricky Jean-Francois.
The Ravens have publicly stated their desire to upgrade at defensive tackle, where they appear to have given up on Terrence Cody. The run-stuffing Jean-Francois would be a nice fit, but he's also been linked to the Packers, Eagles and others. The cap-strapped Ravens are unlikely to be the highest bidder.

I figured his age would make him a bigger target in FA than Soap.

In related "news" from the NFC WEST blog on ESPN today

Offseason plans: Gary Horton and Field Yates recently took an in-depth look at the 49ers' offseason Insider. They list defensive line, linebacker depth, receiver/tight end, quarterback, safety and kicker as the top needs, in that order. They point to Richard Seymour as a veteran the team should consider adding this offseason. "Seymour presents a strong option in free agency on a short-term, moderate-value contract," they write. I could see Seymour helping in Seattle as well.

If Seattle wants him, I'm not sure the 49ers can match their bottomless pockets.

7 seems about right, hopefully, we'll have the trade partners to make things happen.

not many trades occur before the draft, we'll likely wait till day 2?
