How much money is Sean Smith going to ask? also has he been a good corner for Miami? i remember by name he's been one of their better guys.

He is a big boy though...

He's a very good corner. Very underrated player in the league similar to Tarrel Brown in terms of how they just do their job very well and it somewhat goes unnoticed by the world. He would be able to match up well with the bigger receivers in our division/conference.

To answer your question though, I think he will attract a lot of interest. NFL coaches are well aware of how talented he is. So I'm thinking that he would not come all that "cheap". He's relatively young and just entered his prime.

Whispers from Indianapolis | CSN Bay Area

One agent at the NFL scouting combine was telling me about a client.

"There's going to be a market for him," he said. "A lot of teams are asking about him. . ."

And, then, he caught himself.

"I mean, a lot of teams are interested in the position he plays," the agent clarified . . . perhaps.

--Cornerback Carlos Rogers is scheduled to make $5.85 million. The 49ers plan to pick up that contract so he can return for at least another season.

S Dashon Goldson. The 49ers do not plan to use the franchise tag, according to two league sources, which means Goldson, a Pro Bowl and All-Pro safety, will get to test his worth on the open market. You'll recall that "Good Cop" Jim Harbaugh said that Goldson "deserved" a long-term contract. At the combine, "Bad Cop" Trent Baalke said, "You can't pay everybody, and you certainly can't pay everybody if you're overpaying others."

Was he talking about Goldson? That's a very good guess. It could be that the 49ers are taking the same tack with the safety they did before the 2011 season -- allowing him to get to the free-agent market and betting he doesn't get the kind of offers he is seeking. Goldson played very well this past season. Then again, the draft is deep at safety.

Ian Rapoport:

Watch the Eagles on Ricky Jean-Francois, too. May have some competition.

I think we will be re-signing Sop to a very reasonable deal.

Could San Francisco trade up?
February, 27, 2013 12:47PM ET
By Tim Kavanagh | ESPN.com

As we sort through the particulars of the Alex Smith trade that was reported Wednesday, one of the key factors is the compensation heading back from Kansas City to San Francisco. According to our NFL Insider Adam Schefter, the Niners are getting the Chiefs' second-round pick -- No. 34 overall -- in the swap, in addition a conditional mid-round pick in 2014.

So now the Niners have some extra draft ammunition that they can either keep, or use as part of a trade to move up -- remember, they also have Carolina's third-rounder this year. Looking at the draft pick value chart, the second pick in Round 2 is worth 560 points. Packaging that with the No. 31 overall pick, the Niners could move as high as No. 13 if they fell in love with a particular prospect that was still on the board at that time.

That's a big "if," obviously, and the wiser move is probably to just sit where they are and find two useful players. Remember, the team is potentially losing starting safety Dashon Goldson and No. 2 TE Delanie Walker to free agency, and they have a clear need to add at least one playmaker at WR, as well as bolster their CB corps.

But now, thanks to the Chiefs, they do have the ability to make a pretty severe move on the draft's opening night if they so desire.

hopefully there are other teams in the tradeing mood? whether up, down, or into 2014, we'll need willing trade partners.

WE GOT THE 33RD OVERALL PICK FOR THAT CRAP BAG?????!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS IS AMAZING!!!! I was just thinking about how the Niners could possibly find a way to trade up for both Hankins AND Jarvis Jones. Now they can! And they must!!!

Mid round DEs? Not a lot actually. Margus Hunt has some potentail, but I think someone will reach for him in hte 2nd. I'd take a flyer on Kwame Geathers in like the 6th or so, but he's a NT.

I'd actially rather get a DE in FA or trade a 3rd for Jared Odrick. Richard Seymour, Tyson Jackson & Cullen Jenkins are players I'd consider signing. With the options the Niners have in the draft now, I might be back on the Seymour train. I like Alan Branch as a cheaper depth guy too (replace RJF).
