It's still the middle of the combine, so this is probably going to change. But here's my 2013 mid-draft Sick plan:

Cut Haralson, Rogers, Whitner, Akers & maybe Goodwin depending on the draft, but I could live with him for 1 more season.

1. Trade up for Johnathan Hankins. The Niners 3rd rounder plus maybe a 5th should do it. I'd part w/ the 2nd if necessary though.
2. Take either Poyer, Reid or Ertz in the 2nd (in that order).
3. Trade the 3rd rounder from carolina to the Dolphins for Odrick & a 4th rounder.
3a. Bray w/ the 3rd round compensatory pick (steal of the draft).
4. Cornelius Washington
4a. Sean Porter

Sign:

Wallace, DRC, Leotis, Jason Smith (jumbo TE), Alan Branch & Osi. Maybe a TE if Walker bolts. Maybe franchise Goldson for 1 more year depending on the draft & move him to SS.

I'd also be open to signing Tyson Jackson in lieu of Odrick, but I don't know how much money he'll command; either one would be 3rd on the depth chart.

I'd also be open to trading up for Jarvis Jones instead of Hankins, but that would mean I'd re-sign Sopoaga & not signing Osi. Not sure what to do with RJF.

Cornelius Washington could go anywhwere from the 3rd to 6th round, so I put him in the 4th. Either way, I want him in a Niners' uin as a DE.

I didn't include trading up for Richardson because I think he's going around 9-12.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but AJ Jenkins is officially in Atlanta, according to Kaepernick's twitter.

The home @Ajjenkins is in the building..... The grind is real!

Yeah he looks like he is really working hard.

lol...hey it's tough work holding that couch down! As long as the next picture isn't Woods and him fishing on a lake with Rice running up the hill in the background I'll hold out hope for next year. His growth as a player will play a huge role in our draft/FA moves.

The Sideline View's Adam Caplan reports the 49ers "want to re-sign" free agent DT Ricky Jean-Francois, and that he's expected to draw interest from 5-6 teams if he reaches the open market.
The Sacramento Bee indicated Thursday that the 49ers were planning to let Jean-Francois walk, but Caplan reports they're hoping to lock him up before the start of free agency. A four-year veteran, Jean-Francois doesn't project as a future star, but has proven to be a valuable role player. He'd provide solid insurance for an aging Justin Smith next season.

Hey Ray I know you are a big Tennessee guy and I wanted to know your thoughts on Justin Hunter. I know he had drop issues this year but do you think he could be there in the 2nd? And if he was there would you want the 49ers to draft him?

Been busy today so sorry if this was posted. But...wow.

I guess there was some truth to that, disappointing. I hope they don't think this will be like 2 yrs ago when they let him test the market and it wasn't there for him and he came back, the lack of a real off season is probably the biggest reason the market wasn't there for him.

Or maybe they have someone targeted in the draft as his replacement and are thinking ahead to the monster deals that Kaep and Aldon are going to get... oh and Crabs too if he keeps up the pace he had with CK at QB.

To be honest I think if we can't sign him before the 3rd he gets tagged. And if he gets pissy about it try to trade him during the draft.

I doubt he'll be there for our first round pick, depending on what other WRs were available I would draft him there if he made it that far. Deep ball bombs from Kap to him would be pure fun.

So you think Hunter gets drafted in the 1st? I thought the consensus was that only Patterson, Allen and maybe Austin gets drafted in the 1st. Do you think Hunters Combine performance has vaulted him into the 1st?

Probably the right decision. Use that money on Mike Wallace.

agree we could use a deep threat WR, and Wallace clearly fits that bill. but don't view Wallace as an 'overall' WR, able to run most routes at all depths?

IF he's mainly to run downfield, then don't feel we spend that kind of money? we could draft a 3rd rounder for that purpose, granted he'll be a rookie and not as good. but then we also wouldn't be paying him what Wallace wants.

we'll be needing cap space next season too, so wouldn't want to tie it up on a "specialty" WR. it isn't knocking Wallace's talent, but managing value.

if Wallace CAN be an overall WR, then forget all the above. :-)

My draft assessment of these two guys has been a roller coaster ride. Years back on here when Hunter was a freshman I was fully on board with him as THE next big thing at WR which would have put him top 10. Unfortunately he blew his ACL the next season. No worries, come back and get better as the year goes on and he should be fine. Problem was he got a severe case of the dropsies this year. It was really bad. Lots of TD plays fell off his hands. He also never put on any weight until after this season before the combine which surely slowed his forty time. Still he posted a pretty fast time and now he's not a twig. I see him going in the first round most likely before our pick because you can't ignore his size and speed. All he has to do is beat press run by the CB and catch a bomb. He would be the perfect fit for Kap's arm. It would be almost unfair.

Patterson was my draft crush this year. Unfortunately he has finally answered my year long wonder about his noggin. It looks like he is scrambled eggs for brains. Will this knock him down in the draft? Far enough to us? We will just have to wait and see.

As for Allen he just isn't the same player I saw 2 years ago. Now he has a banged up knee. He concerns me A LOT. I could see him making it to our pick.

Austin looks to have shot up the from the bottom of the first now that he has answered the questions about his true speed.

I see no way Hopkins makes it to our pick either. There is literally no knocks on the guy at all.

Cullen Jenkins - DL - Free Agent

Eagles informed DT Cullen Jenkins of his release.
Jenkins' time in Philadelphia ends just two years into a five-year deal. All of Jenkins' guaranteed money had already been paid. Part of the Eagles' ballyhooed 2011 free agent class, Jenkins ended up tallying just 9.5 sacks in 32 games. He registered seven sacks in 11 contests for the Packers during his walk year in 2010. The emergence of Fletcher Cox and the Eagles' abandonment of the "wide nine" made Jenkins wholly expendable.

He flourished in his last season for GB as a 34 end when Raji came in at NT that season. Hmm. Probably too old and expensive.

Alex Smith - QB - 49ers

The Kansas City Star agrees there's "enough smoke" behind the Alex Smith-to-Chiefs trade rumors to believe Smith will indeed be the team's starting quarterback in 2013.
The 49ers are not expected to trade Smith in the division, likely ruling out the Cardinals. The Browns and Jaguars have both said they're not in the Smith bidding. As beat writer Adam Teicher notes, "the Chiefs have issued no such denial." The Smith saga will drag on until March 12, when the trading period opens around the NFL. Expect Kansas City to acquire Smith shortly thereafter.

Alex Smith - QB - 49ers

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the 49ers "believe" they'll be able to trade Alex Smith after actively shopping him at the Combine.
CBS Sports reported Sunday that a deal was already all but done. Stories from NFL.com and now ESPN seem to support that notion, though it's been disputed by the Sacramento Bee. Per Schefter, San Francisco received a "legitimate amount of interest" in Smith at the Combine, and the Chiefs are definitely interested. The Cardinals "are also thought to be." Sources tell Schefter "there is no deal in place right now," but expect one to happen right around March 12.

Thanks Ray the reason why I asked because I don't think we should draft a WR in the 1st. IMO we need DL depth and a future starter. I also believe Jenkins will pan out for us I just think he was behind the 8ball this year not only with the WRs in front of him but in essence having to learn to playbooks in his rookie year.

I would not mind a WR in the 2nd though and Hunter did intrigue me even if we had to move up to get him. But I think we need a big physical with an F (shout out to the Samurai) type of possession WR and what I take from Hunter is he is a speed guy. I think Jenkins will fill the speed role in our offense next year.
