Trade Flores?

I just entered into my MLB Show 2012 (current rosters) and I was able to get Ohtani and Freeman from the dogs, with the dogs picking up the bulk of both of their contracts…
Release Flores? I do think the Giants could possibly get cash or a C level prospect for Flores but there is no guarantee that another team would be willing to trade for him. At least try.

And can you relate this deal you got to Posey? He needs to work on that ASAP.

I'm saying that 2024 is concerning. I haven't heard any explanation as to why his offensive production cratered. Like I said, it may be a one year blip but why buy high when there are concerns?
There are questions marks on Kim as well, but at least he won't cost prospects or draft picks. If I had to choose between the two, I'd take Kim.
you wouldn't be buying high...you'd be buying low.

Whisenhunt+? For this org, that seems to be buying high. (And, yes, I know that Whisenhunt struggled in AAA this year).
Buying high means you paid at the top of the market. Bichette isn't at the top of the market. If he were, he'd cost Eldridge.

The boomerang continues? The Giants acquired him during the 2024 season and then shipped him off a month later. The team does need some AAA depth at catcher. That spot is really weak at the upper levels right now.

We probably need AT LEAST 2 MLB-capable catchers in Sacto. We already have Sabol, but his catching prowess is questionable at best, so I would prefer to have 2 in addition to Sabol. I have no idea if Porter qualifies for one of those spots.

Depends on how you view MLB capable. Porter has played in the big leagues.
I’d like to see Sabol moved to the outfield full time. Maybe his bat would improve.

It is obviously a very fragile/fuzzy definition, sure. I just mean that we need 2 guys who can fill in as a backup without picking up some schlub off the street who would be better. Basically, a legit depth piece vs a prospect.

I do understand that Flores is needed, as of now. My scenario is what to do with the surplus of 1st basemen if Santander is signed and used to play primarily 1st base. We wouldn't need, in theory, all three of Santander, Wade and Flores.

Either I misunderstood your initial post, or you misunderstood my response.

Weren't we discussing catchers, and Porter specifically?

Oops, you moved on to the catcher spot and I was somehow linking that to the 1st base conversation. Should have known that I couldn't handle discussion on more than one positional need at a time.

And here's the official announcement of Porter's signing over on MLBTR - Giants, Logan Porter Agree To Minor League Deal

Sounds like he is a decent defensive catcher with an inconsistent bat. Sounds like this year's Jakson Reetz, so if Porter gets called up for whatever reason, does Minasian pull a Putila and grab an identical catcher from another organization to quickly replace Porter?

Reetz is about the very bottom of where I would accept. Probably below where I would like.

But 4th string catcher is not a major point of emphasis, so whatevs.

Problem is, I don't really think Sabol is any better than Reetz. Reetz performed better at AAA this last season and supposedly is better defensively than Sabol. I would assume that Porter fits right in the Sabol/Reetz area of catching. So the conversation is more about 3rd catcher in depth charts. Maybe a little more important but hardly anything top 5 on team needs.

I would Sabol NOT be counted in our catcher depth. Keep that ability as a “back pocket tool”, not a reason why he is on a roster. So comparing his catcher skills to Sabol is not a selling point.

I guess I don't understand why Wilmer (who i like fwiw) is needed. Wade is 1st base and can't we do a 1st base reserve by committee behind him? We need an elite RH bat (DH and/or whatever position), I just don't see Flowers as elite at the plate or in the field

Not trying to sell his catching skills. Just pointing out that, right now, he is 3rd on the depth charts. The Giants played him a lot at catcher in AAA last year.
