I guess I don't understand why Wilmer (who i like fwiw) is needed. Wade is 1st base and can't we do a 1st base reserve by committee behind him? We need an elite RH bat (DH and/or whatever position), I just don't see Flowers as elite at the plate or in the field
Wade and Flores form a lefty/righty platoon.

I would create a righty/lefty platoon with Wade as well, but I don’t think anyone would say I would be a benefit to the roster.

Agreed. Forget about Cal because he’s only high priced.

Now this is an interesting development.
Just a ploy to increase bidders (or perceived bidders). He is a 3B, and that is where a good amount of his value is.

That is very likely, considering he is a Boras client. Maybe the Giants can up the money some other team will pay.

However, if the Giants are intent on losing draft picks next year, and Bregman really would be willing to move to 2nd base, he'd be a nice bat to have in the lineup and I would assume his stellar defense would translate to 2nd base.

But some guys defense goes down moving to a new position, like who was that guy? Oh yes Huff :)

2B is not a critical defensive position. Signing an elite defensive player and putting him at 2B is a waste.

Huff played 2B, and it arguably ended his career. I totally forgot about that. He went on the DL right after because he literally went cukoo

So if the Giants miss on Adames and Kim, do they pass up on Bregman if he is still available?
I don’t think they will or should target him. Why pay an elite defensive 3B to play 2B. You are paying premium 3B dollars for a 2B bat. It just isn’t a fit.

I'd be okay with a late pickup if the market stalls on him and the Giants didn't get their shortstop, especially if the Giants have already forfeited picks in 2025. I'd rather have draft picks than flashy signings but if the Giants are intent on going the QO signings way then grab an above average bat, with a good glove, to play 2nd base. His OPS+ has always been above league average for 3rd base. I'd have to imagine it would be even better for 2nd base.

Does anyone know if we signed Soto yet? Please let me know when you have time. Thanks.

If you are talking a highly depressed price, sure. I am ok with that for almost anyone. But paying him a relatively fair price for us to play him at 2B makes no sense.

Interesting .... looking through a lot of the Soto chattering it appears that he is asking for an Ohtani type of an offer. Seen references to 700M but without the deferment. A few of the sport writers think he will get it. Most think he will sign with either the Mets or the Yankees.

He is good player but I don't see him as a 'generational' player. But I guess if you are looking for a long term building block you look at Soto.

This seems to be the norm now. Top tier players want maximum payout and for long term contracts. Seem to be in the 8-10 year range. This was the path for Ohtani, Yamamoto and Judge. I'm guessing we will see more of this in the future.

well, you've hit the nail here. If you believe that a 26 year old guy with a career 120 OPS+ and averages 25 bombs a year is washed, then you don't make the deal.

I'd do it.
Same for me with Robert on the White Sox
